Sophia Dwyer made the long haul from Franklin County to Montgomery City to compete in the Willard and Gloria Leverett Memorial Kids Pedal Tractor Pull on Aug. 17.
The long trip paid off for the 12-year-old as she won her first tractor pull championship in 49 feet, 4 inches at the Leverett Memorial event, which was held during the Old Threshers Show at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.
“I liked it,” Sophia said. “It’s my first time getting first place.”
Sophia – who lives in Gerald, an hour south of Montgomery City – earned a first-place trophy for her victory. Trophies were handed out to the top three finishers in each division.
The Leverett Memorial Kids Pedal Tractor Pull is named after the Middletown couple who died within a day apart in September 2021 from a car accident. Willard and Gloria Leverett were in charge of the event for many years.
The event was divided into three divisions – 0-30 pounds, 31-60 pounds and 61-90 pounds. Each participant rides a tractor with bricks in the back.
This year’s event had a strong turnout with 36 participants. There were 14 participants each in the 0-30 and 31-60 pound divisions and eight in the 61-90 pound division. Easton Hill (31-60 pounds) and Ilam Tannehill (0-30 pounds) were the other champions.
Easton defeated Allan Cobb in a winner-take-all race after both of them reached a full pull in their first attempts. Easton finished in 35 feet, 3 inches, while Allan had a 33-3.
Ilam won his division at 16 feet, 6 inches.
Besides Allan, the other second-place finishers were Everett Garrett (0-30) and Joel Heger (61-90). The third-place finishers were Jack Bolte (0-30), Beau Reagan (31-60) and Josie Bolte (61-90).
Sophia, who will be a seventh-grader student at Immaculate Conception in Union this fall, has competed in about 10 pedal tractor pull events, including one in Rosebud, which is a town in Gasconade County. She said she enjoys competing in tractor pull events.
“I think it makes my mom and dad proud of me,” Sophia said.
She definitely made them proud on the morning of Aug. 17.
