Luttrells help Wildcats get on winning track

Dominic Luttrell was thrilled when his twin brother, Brenden, joined him on the Montgomery County football team this fall.

“It’s definitely an experience and it brings us closer,” Dominic said. “We’re already close as it is. We were born together. We know everything. We’ve done everything together. It just builds such a bond. I love this guy so much. He’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Now, the Luttrells are looking to help the Wildcats finish on a strong note as their season comes down to its final weeks. They helped MCHS get back-to-back wins over Wright City (36-14) and Louisiana (22-14) after starting off 0-5. The Wildcats (2-6) will play South Callaway at 7 p.m.  at home to wrap up their regular season.

“Through the summer, we were like, ‘We have a really strong team, we have a bunch of athletes, we’re going to grind and we’re going to win.’ Unfortunately, it didn’t go that way to start the season, but now it’s starting to turn around,” Dominic said. “We’re going to keep going and we’re going to keep winning.”

Brenden said he was pleased with the way his team played against Wright City. The Wildcats outscored Wright City 22-0 in the second half.

“This game was amazing,” Brenden said. “We all played a great game. I’m super proud of every individual who played on this football field tonight. It was just a good game. We came out, we wanted to win and we did.”

The Luttrells transferred from Eldon last year. This fall, they are part of a senior class that includes Adam Czerniewski, Travis Hill, Harrison Bishop, Gunner Sexton, Cayden Thurmon and Aiden Brush.

Dominic said he enjoys playing for a program that has strong fan support every Friday night.

“We still have people coming to our games,” Dominic said. “We still have people cheering us on. Most of our school were like, ‘Hey, you guys got this. Let’s go. You guys pick it up. You guys are good.’ The atmosphere is great. The coaches are great.”

Dominic, a halfback, is playing in his second year with the Wildcats. Last year, he caught for 121 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 106 yards on 27 carries with a touchdown. He was the Wildcats’ starting quarterback against Wright City and scored an 11-yard touchdown run to lead MCHS to a 42-26 win.

This year, Dominic has a pair of touchdowns, one against Mark Twain and the other against Wright City. He also did some quarterbacking this season.

“I love quarterbacking,” said Dominic, who has been playing football since second grade. “At the beginning of the season, when I came back, I was like, ‘You know, I really didn’t want to play quarterback.’ Then, stuff happened. They were like, ‘You know, Dom, you’re going to have to step up and play quarterback.’ I love every single second of it. Right now, Adam is getting more healthy as the season goes by. I was moved back to my receiver position. I’m going to go out there the best I can and play every snap for the team.”

Brenden, a running back, has four touchdowns this season, one each against Monroe City and Van-Far and two against Louisiana.

“It’s fun,” Brenden said. “It’s my first year ever playing running back. It’s a little different, but I love every second of it. It’s such a joy to me running hard, getting hit in the elbows and getting punched in the arms. I think I could be better. I know I could be better than every single player out there. I’ve just got to work.”

Brenden, who started playing football in middle school, said coach John Klekamp has been helpful to him and his brother.
“Coach K is almost like a father figure to every kid,” Brenden said. “Every kid is super important and he loves every single one of us.”

The Luttrells also compete in track during the spring. Dominic earned an all-state medal after helping the 800-meter relay team place sixth at the Class 3 state meet in May.
