MCHS cruises past W-M in Pink Out girls contest

Just four days after setting a school record for most 3-pointers in a game, Maddy Queathem didn’t show any signs of slowing down against the Wellsville-Middletown Tigers in the Pink Out game on Dec. 17 at Ballew & Snell Court.

The Montgomery County sophomore helped her team knock off W-M for the 12th consecutive year in the annual game between cross-county rivals by turning in another strong performance behind the arc. She hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points to lift the Wildcats to a 58-30 win over the Tigers.

“Maddy is a really good shooter,” MCHS coach Joe Basinger said. “Coming into the game, she was shooting 40 percent from the three-point line. That was with some games that she didn’t shoot up to her capabilities.”

Queathem helped the Wildcats hit a total of 11 three-pointers. She said she was happy her team picked up the victory in an event in which both schools were raising money for cancer research.

“This win was pretty big, but it’s just nice to see the community come together,” Queathem said. “It’s not so much about the win. It’s more about cancer and why we’re here for the cause of this.”

Queathem nailed five 3-pointers in the Wildcats’ 49-30 win over Silex on Dec. 13, tying a school record that was set by Anna Henke during the 2016-17 season.

“It’s pretty nice to tie a school record,” Queathem said. “One of my big goals is to achieve that title of having that record. I just hope I can get there one day.”

Against the Tigers, Queathem was one of three players who finished in double figures. She hit two of her treys in the second quarter.

The sophomore credits Basinger for her strong perimeter game this season.

“Coach Basinger always says, ‘Shooters shoot,’ ” Queathem said. “So I try to listen to him and do my best and keep my head clear throughout the game.”

Sophomore Malia Rodgers finished with 14 points and sophomore Claire Cobb added 12 points with three 3-pointers off the bench for the Wildcats, who improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in Eastern Missouri Conference play.

The sophomore class – which also included Morgan Koch, Madi Polston and Olivia Shaw – scored 53 of the Wildcats’ points.

“We play every summer together,” Queathem said. “We’ve been playing together since grade school, so we kind of know how each of us play well with each other. We kind of have that connection on the floor.”

Cobb scored eight of her points in the second half.

“She took a lot of really good shots and caused some disruption on defense,” Basinger said. “She’s a kid who kind of waited her turn for these first few games and started figuring out what we want from her. She did a nice job for us tonight.”

The Wildcats stormed to a 10-0 lead in the first period and never looked back against W-M.

“We started out pretty rough,” Basinger said. “We didn’t shoot the ball very well to start the game. We kind of got sloppy with the ball and gave up too many offensive rebounds in the first quarter. We kind of got going a little bit there in the second quarter. The momentum kind of carried over. We played well.”

The Tigers dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in EMO play. Freshman Indica Scott scored 10 points off the bench to lead W-M.
