Lily Hillebrand and Alaina Zerr enjoyed a memorable vacation on June 29-July 3.
The eighth graders from Montgomery County Middle School made the 1,729-mile trip to San Diego, Calif., to attend the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference, which was held at the San Diego Convention Center.
Hillebrand and Zerr not only spent a week going to leadership sessions and networking with other FCCLA members, but they also got a chance to enjoy the California sunshine. It was the first time they visited the Golden State.
“It was good,” Zerr said. “It was at least 20 degrees warmer there than it is here. When we went to the beach, the water was really, really cold.”
Hillebrand and Zerr also earned a big honor at the national conference. They finished with a silver award for their project, Taste The Rainbow, where they discussed how they lead the chapter in teaching elementary students about the importance of eating healthy fruits and vegetables.
“We did really well,” Zerr said.
The two students competed at the regional and state levels and were selected to represent MCMS and the state of Missouri at the national conference. Over 7,100 students from across the country attended the event.
“I liked the beach, meeting new people in the conference and seeing what they have to offer,” Hillebrand said. “At one of the workshops we went to, we learned about how to deal with change and we learned how to manage stuff. For our school, we learned how to fundraise so we could go to more conferences.”
For several months, Hillebrand and Zerr sought donations to help pay for the trip. They raised $1,500.
Zerr said MCMS FCCLA advisor Catherine Mayberry was helpful in getting her and Hillebrand to California.
“I would like to thank her a lot because she helped us fill out all of the paperwork and get everything booked for this trip,” Zerr said.
Zerr and Hillebrand will enter their third year as FCCLA members this fall. Both also are involved in 4-H as Zerr is a member of the Montgomery Progressors and Hillebrand is one of the Bellflower Boosters.
Zerr and Hillebrand participate in cheerleading and softball, respectively, at MCMS.
