MCPL holds See You At The Library event

When Tiffany Singer was picked to coordinate the See You At The Library program at the Montgomery City Public Library on Aug. 24, she was very excited about the opportunity to help children appreciate a love for the United States.

“I was totally inspired,” the Montgomery City resident said. “I wanted to do this. I love books. I want to read to the kiddos.”

For 90 minutes, Singer read stories and conducted activities to several children at the MCPL Community Room. MCPL was one of numerous libraries across the nation that held the See You At The Library event.

“They’re just good, wholesome stories that built character within the kiddos,” Singer said. “They do come with scripture cards. They have memory verse cards for the kiddos and conversation cards for the families. They also have the Bill of Rights.”

See You At The Library wrapped up its second year. It is a national day in which libraries host story hours that focus on American, Constitutional and Biblical values. Patrons also get to sing the National Anthem and do some praying.

Actor Kirk Cameron, who was best known for playing Mike Seaver on the 1980s TV show, “Growing Pains,” came up with the idea of the See You At The Library event last year after he was turned down by 50 libraries to read his book, “As You Grow,” which teaches about the Biblical truths of the Fruit of the Spirit. He was denied his First Amendment rights.

“He had to really fight for the First Amendment, where he was talking about just the freedom to be able to gather into a place like (the Montgomery City Public Library),” Singer said. “He had to push and he had some opposition to push back, but he did it. He’s got influence. He’s an actor, so he has the influence to do so.”

Over 300 libraries in 46 states hosted a See You At The Library program, drawing more than 10,000 people.

MCPL was one of 10 libraries in Missouri that hosted a See You At The Library event. The other locations included St. Charles, Springfield, Joplin and Kansas City.

Singer said the event at Montgomery City was a successful one even though her family members and friends were the only people in attendance.

“I’m sad because I heard about it late and I didn’t advertise it as well as I wanted to,” Singer said. “But I was like, ‘Hey, there’s always next year.’ Next year, we’ll advertise it. This is something fun. I want to see this within the kiddos. I want to see our kiddos on fire and loving their country and stepping into future leadership. Our generation is going to be the ones leading us.”
