MoCo BackStoppers to hold fundraiser

The Montgomery Fire Protection District building will turn into a makeover party for females from the Montgomery County area on June 30.

The Montgomery County BackStoppers organization will have its first fundraising event called Ladies Night at the Station from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. The event will give females an opportunity to make some jewelry, get manicures, do some canvas painting and drink some mocktails. Tee Square DJ of Montgomery City will provide the music.

Proceeds will help support the families of first responders such as police officers, firefighters and EMS workers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

“I think they should come because it will be fun,” MFPD assistant chief Jessica Davis said. “All of the money they spend on their fun will be used to support the families of our first responders. If something unfortunate happens to one of us, it will be very comforting to know that they are going to be taken care of.”

There will be five different stations at the event – facial/makeup, manicures, jewelry making, canvas painting and succulent bar. The cost is $20 per station or $100 for all five stations.

“Each station will have something they can walk away with,” Davis said.

Davis and three other area residents – Kristal Zerr, Lauren Fortmann and Mackenzie Hegemeyer – teamed up to come up with the idea of the Ladies Night fundraiser a month ago.

“I had the idea to do a Ladies Night,” Davis said. “At first, I was thinking of a painting party. Then, I thought it might be fun to have different activities. Some of the firefighters’ wives and I got together and discussed it.”

Davis said the event impressed BackStoppers fundraising and social media manager Kaitlyn Klaus.

“She said she thought it was really fun,” Davis said. “She actually reached out with us and said she wanted to add it to their calendar.”

Fortmann will be in charge of the succulent bar that will include mocktails such as the Water Hose, Fire on the Beach, Flamethrower, Flashover and Fire Extinguisher. Davis will take care of the canvas painting station and Zerr will be in charge of the jewelry making station.

There will also be several vendors at the event that will include Jolene Rodgers of Varsity Ink, Alyssa Lauer, Bryanna Smolko, Fox and Fern Furnishings, Laura Oliver, Bridget Green and Tisha Stewart. Davis said the vendors will donate 25 percent of their proceeds to BackStoppers.

Last year, Montgomery County was invited to join the BackStoppers organization, which serves 28 counties in Missouri and Illinois. It created its first board of directors in March that included Airianna Brewer, Will Burke, Paul Eveland, Dan Gevermuehle and Sherry Lato.

“I was very excited when we got invited,” Davis said. “Jeff Edwan (assistant chief of the Jonesburg-High Hill Fire Protection District) and I worked on the paperwork that we needed to get it done and get signed up. We got it done. The next step is we agreed to fundraise, so we needed to get some things going.”
