New coach leads MCHS cheerleaders

Over 20 years ago, Jamie Schroer was a member of the Montgomery County basketball cheerleading team.

Now, she is in her first year as coach of the Wildcats’ basketball cheerleading squad.

“I previously coached at Troy,” Schroer said. “When I moved back here last year, I wasn’t coaching. So when the position became open, I talked to (MCHS activities director) Adam (Falloon) about it. I told him I was interested and he hired me.”

Schroer, who has 14 years of cheerleading coaching experience, is heading a basketball cheerleading team that has seven members. Seniors Peyton McGough and Myla Woltman, sophomores Brianna Stierlin, Emma Stephenson and Serenity Stokes and freshmen Nevaeh Johnson and Peyton Eoff make up the squad.

“They all seem to be enjoying it,” said Schroer, who graduated from MCHS in 2001. “All of them have commented on how much fun they’re having this season. They’ve been really excited about it. They weren’t sure they were going to get to have a season because their numbers have been kind of low in the past. They weren’t sure who was going to coach them. They were all really excited that the school hired me to coach and I had experience and they had the numbers to be able to have a season.”

Woltman is back for her third season as basketball cheerleader. She was also on the football cheerleading squad last fall.

“It’s a little bit stressful at times,” Woltman said. “My life is really busy with it, but I probably won’t give it up for the world. That’s why I’ve done football and basketball seasons the whole time I’ve been here.”

McGough is also back for her third season as basketball cheerleader. She was on the squad in her freshman and sophomore years. She participated in football cheerleading last fall.

“It’s my senior year and these girls know that,” McGough said. “They’re trying to make it the best they could possibly be for me and Myla.”

Stierlin returns for her second year with the cheerleading team.

“It’s great,” Stierlin said. “I actually like it a lot better this year and I feel like we all work better as a team. It’s really nice getting to know everybody and working with everybody.”

Stephenson, Stokes, Johnson and Eoff are cheering at the high school level for the first time. Eoff said she is having an enjoyable time cheering in both girls and boys basketball games.

“I think it has definitely been one to remember,” she said. “It’s a great group of girls and we have a great coach.”
