New Florence aldermen approve revocation of occupancy permit for home

The New Florence Board of Aldermen voted June 8 to revoke the occupancy permit for a home at 206 N. Broadwater St., determining the residence is no longer safe to occupy.

The vote was a unanimous decision by aldermen. The home is owned by Jean Horn, who attended the meeting with her daughter, Tonya Hollensteiner, to discuss the property’s condition.

“There is a lot of stuff wrong with it,” Horn told the board. “I’m not going to lie.”

The issue first came before the board in April, when aldermen learned a blue tarp had been placed over part of the home’s roof.

“They were putting a blue tarp on there,” Hollensteiner said. “I called City Hall because it was raining and she got a leak from where a tree had fallen on the house, taking down all of the power lines and everything.”

Following the April discussion, the city contacted Horn and a state inspection of the residence was conducted. Based on the inspection, the board determined the home was unsafe for occupancy.

The board’s action required Horn to vacate the home within three days. While she may return to the residence to retrieve belongings, she cannot legally live there until the necessary repairs are completed.

“We just want you to be safe,” Alderman Brian Carter told Horn before the meeting concluded.
