New Florence Police Chief Tyler Beasley passed away on April 29 at age 36 at his home in Columbia.

Beasley worked for the New Florence Police Department for nearly three years. He worked at the Reynolds County Sheriff’s Office and the New Haven Police Department before joining the New Florence police staff in September 2023.

“Even though this was not an in the line of duty death, Chief had made a very good impact within the community and associated himself with several of the residences throughout calls for services and things of that nature,” New Florence City Administrator David Ingle said. “So, there have been several citizens who I would say are at the very least shocked by the news of his passing.”

Services have been scheduled for 4 p.m.-7 p.m. on May 15 at the Courtyard by Marriott Ballroom at 3301 Lemone Industrial Boulevard in Columbia. To get access to the building, drivers must take the Stadium Boulevard exit.

Ingle said Beasley’s replacement will likely be discussed at the New Florence Board of Aldermen meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday (May 11).

“There are several different avenues that they need to work through and make some decisions on,” Ingle said. “Right now, we do have an active part time staff that has stepped up and started to take over some of the duties in the police department that were filled by Ty on a day-to-day basis. That is a paramount situation. The City of New Florence definitely requires a full-time police officer, especially with the current growth status.”

Beasley graduated from Hickman High School in Columbia. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer and three children.

A print version of this story will be published in the May 13 edition of the Montgomery Standard.
