Personal property tax deadline approaching

Time is running out for Montgomery County residents to pay their personal property taxes for 2023.

The deadline to pay the taxes is Dec. 31. Since the due date is on a Sunday and the collector’s office is not open, residents are encouraged to pay their tax bill by Dec. 29.

“If they want to walk in-person, our last business day before they become delinquent is going to be Friday the 29th,” Montgomery County Collector Anita Sullivan said. “There are other ways that they can pay and still be on time. We have a website for the county. If you use a card, there are additional charges for using a card to pay. There’s a 1-800 number that you can call, but you have to pay a card fee. There are additional charges and fees depending on the type of card it is.”

Residents can pay online at www.mcmo.us or by phone at 833-969-1220. Convenience fees will apply and receipts will be mailed the next business day.

Sullivan had one individual who reminded her on Dec. 8 that the due date for paying personal taxes lands on a day in which the collector’s office is not open for business, forcing her to stress the importance to county residents of paying the bill early.

“It will be great to reach out to them and remind them because I know how it is,” Sullivan said. “Life’s busy. If you’re not paying taxes every day, you’re not thinking about the 31st being on a Sunday.”

Sullivan said the collector’s office has received a large number of payments since November.

“We did $2.3 million in November that have already been turned over to the treasurer,” Sullivan said. “We’re already at over $2 million in December. But we’ve got a long way to go.”

Sullivan said taxpayers need to have a 2023 postmark on their payment to avoid paying penalty and interest. The penalty and interest is 11 percent on Jan. 1 and increase by two percent on the first of each month.

“If it comes with a 2024 postmark, it will be considered delinquent,” Sullivan said. “Even if you put it in your mailbox out on the rural route on Friday and they pick it up on Saturday, if it doesn’t make it to the post office to get a postmark until the 2024 year, then it’s still delinquent. That’s state law.”

Residents can drop off their payment at the drop box, located at 310 Salisbury in Montgomery City. Sullivan said she plans to grab all of the payments out of the drop box around midnight on Dec. 31.

“It’s available 24/7, but it gets emptied out at midnight on the 31st,” Sullivan said. “Anything that is put in there after midnight on the 31st would be delinquent, also.”

Since the due date is on a Sunday, there is no extension on the deadline. The collector’s office will also not be open on Dec. 30 as it closes on Saturdays.
