Montgomery City residents Jeff Porter and Jason Luna celebrated victories in contested races in the primary election on Aug. 6, winning the Montgomery County assessor and coroner races, respectively.
Porter won the Republican seat of the assessor race by 202 votes over Montgomery County resident Greg Czerniewski. Porter finished with 1,025 votes, followed by Czerniewski with 823 and Bob Hildebrand with 507. Luna won the Republican seat of the coroner race by just 74 votes over Mike Gouveia. Luna finished with 1,183 votes, while Gouveia had 1,109.
Also, Rhineland resident and current Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey defeated Will Scharf 1,686-620 in the Republican seat of the Attorney General race. He will face Elad Gross (Democrat) and Ryan Munro (Libertarian) in the general election in November. Both Gross and Munro won their races uncontested.
Dave Teeter (1st District Commissioner), Doug Lensing (2nd District Commissioner), Carole Weeks (County Clerk), Craig Allison (Sheriff), Kaley Reagan (Public Administrator) and Larry Bade (Surveyor) won uncontested races in their respective elections.
Jeff Myers ran uncontested in the Republican seat of the 42nd District State Representative race and finished with 567 votes. Shaun Sparks won the Democratic seat uncontested with 80 votes. Both will square off in the general election in November. The 42nd District serves the eastern part of Montgomery County and Warren County.
Bruce Sassmann came out on top in the Republican seat of the 61st District State Representative race, winning by 307 votes over Paul Stratman. Sassmann had 838 votes, followed by Stratman with 531 and Brian Tharp with 227. The 61st District represents all of Osage and Gasconade counties and parts of Miller and Montgomery County counties.
Richard Schiebe ran uncontested in the Republican seat of the 12th Circuit Judge race and finished with 2,013 votes.
In the other state races, county residents voted for Josh Hawley (Republican), Lucas Kunce (Democrat) and W.C. Young (Libertarian) for U.S. Senator; Mike Kehoe (Republican), Crystal Quade (Democrat) and Bill Slantz (Libertarian) for Governor; Denny Hoskins (Republican), Barbara Phifer (Democrat) and Carl Freese (Libertarian) for Secretary of State; Vivek Malek (Republican), Mark Osmack (Democrat) and John Hartwig, Jr. (Libertarian) for State Treasurer; Lincoln Hough (Republican), Richard Brown (Democrat) and Ken Iverson (Libertarian) for Lieutenant Governor; and Bob Onder (Republican), Bethany E. Mann (Democrat) and Jordan Rowden (Libertarian) for U.S. Representative in Congress 3rd District.
According to the Montgomery County Clerk’s office, the voter turnout was 32.96 percent. Big Spring had the highest turnout with 35.23 percent.
“Our turnout was about average for the state,” Weeks said. “For the most part, the election went smoothly.”
