The deadline for paying personal property taxes is approaching for Montgomery County residents.
The due date to pay the taxes is Dec. 31. To avoid penalties and interest, residents must pay their taxes by 11:59 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
“It goes up 11 percent on Jan. 1,” Montgomery County Collector Anita Sullivan said. “That’s a big jump in penalties and interest.”
Residents can pay online at www.officialpayments.com or by phone at 800-272-9829. Convenience fees will apply and receipts will be mailed the next business day.
Last year, the deadline to pay personal property taxes was Dec. 31, but since the due date was on a Sunday and the collector’s office was not open, residents were encouraged to pay their tax bill two days earlier. There was no extension on the deadline.
This year’s due date is on a Tuesday and the collector’s office, located at 310 Salisbury, is open for business. Residents can drop off their payment at the drop box after business hours.
“People start calling and thinking that we’re closed on New Year’s Eve, but we’re not,” Sullivan said. “We’re open all day on New Year’s Eve until 4:30 p.m. We have a drop box that they can use until midnight on the 31st.”
Sullivan said the collector’s office has received a large number of payments as the year 2024 is coming down to its final days.
“We are right at $6 million so far in December and we will get $14 million before the year is over,” Sullivan said.
