SCAM ALERT: The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn residents of an increase in scams involving money transfer applications such as Cash App, Venmo and PayPal, as well as phone and computer-based fraud attempts. Scammers are contacting individuals through phone calls, text messages, social media and email, often claiming to be from a government agency, business or even a family member in need. Victims are then instructed to send money through mobile payment apps, cards or to mail cash, checks or other financial documents to a specific address. The Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens that legitimate agencies and businesses will never request payment through mobile apps or request you to download an app or mail them cash. If you receive a suspicious message or call asking for money, do not send funds, download apps or share personal information. Hang up and contact the organization directly using a verified phone number other than the one the caller calls from or gives you.

On October 11th, deputies conducted a traffic stop near Highway 19 and Cedar Road in Wellsville after observing a vehicle swerving across the center and fog lines and lacking a rear license plate. During the stop deputies made contact with the passenger who displayed nervous behavior and admitted to being on parole for drug-related offenses. After exiting the vehicle the passenger was patted down and a clear plastic baggie containing a crystalline substance was observed dangling from his pocket. The substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed approximately 1.2 grams. He was arrested, transported to the MC Jail and charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Also on October 11th, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a motorcycle traveling westbound on Interstate 70 near mile marker 171 in Danville after observing the driver fail to signal and operate without a rear license plate. During the stop deputies made contact with the driver and passenger. A search of the passenger’s purse revealed a vial containing methadone pills and a further search of a book bag attached to the motorcycle uncovered a capsule containing fentanyl and cocaine. The driver admitted ownership of the capsule while the passenger admitted to an addiction to fentanyl and methamphetamine. Both the driver and passenger were arrested. Prior to arriving at the jail, the passenger admitted to concealing methamphetamine inside her pants. Deputies recovered a clear plastic bag containing approximately 21 grams of methamphetamine. The driver was charged with possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to register a motor vehicle and failure to signal. On October 14th, deputies responded to a residence on Clay Street in Wellsville for a report of a domestic disturbance. According to reports the suspect became agitated and accused a family member of poisoning his cigarettes before throwing a wooden kitchen chair that struck the victim. The victim sustained minor injuries and declined medical attention. When deputies arrived, they located the suspect outside the residence. During the investigation the suspect was found to have two active warrants out of St. Charles City, as well as being on parole for prior felony convictions. The suspect was arrested, transported to the MC Jail and charged with domestic assault, along with being held on the active warrants.
Also on October 14th, deputies responded to a property-damage crash near Garrett and Fleahman Roads in the High Hill area. According to reports a pickup failed to stop at a “T” intersection, entered a cornfield and likely rolled before leaving the scene. Investigators recovered trash and personal items in the field and later located a heavily damaged red Chevrolet Silverado at an address on Highway Y with a crushed roof, broken windshield, a flat driver-side front tire and corn stalks hanging from the front end. The driver admitted being the sole occupant and described the truck rolling before he left the scene. According to reports, the passenger displayed nervous behavior and had a pouch commonly used to conceal narcotics or weapons slung across his shoulder. Deputies detected a strong odor of marijuana and observed drug paraphernalia, tobacco products and an alcoholic beverage inside the vehicle. A probable cause search revealed a loaded handgun under the passenger seat and was later confirmed as a stolen firearm out of the State of Florida. The passenger, a convicted felon on probation for prior drug and firearm offenses, was prohibited from possessing a firearm. The passenger was arrested, transported to the MC Jail and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, minor in possession of alcohol and stealing a firearm.

During contact the suspect provided false information and was found in possession of a bag containing a crystalline substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Deputies observed signs of drug impairment and the suspect refused to submit to both a blood test and a drug recognition expert evaluation. A search warrant was later obtained for a blood draw which was completed by a certified law enforcement phlebotomist. Further investigation revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen in Warrenton earlier that day, with video surveillance confirming the suspect’s involvement.
