The Wildcats’ outstanding 2026 season ended on Monday with an 8-1 loss to the Elsberry Indians in the Class 2, District 2 championship game at Valley Park High School, coming up two wins short of making their second straight Final Four appearance.
MCHS finished its season at 19-9, its fourth consecutive winning season. The loss ended the high school softball careers of Reese Hill, Sam Turner and Jillian Weekley, who finished as the winningest senior class in the history of the MCHS softball program with 87 wins.
The Wildcats were the top seed in the district tournament. They had an easy 17-1 win over Louisiana in the semifinals on Saturday to advance to Monday’s district finals.
Elsberry, the No. 3 seed, improved to 24-9 and captured its seventh district title in the last eight years. The Indians will play either Chaffee or Kelly in a state quarterfinal game on Oct. 24. Chaffee and Kelly will square off in the District 1 championship game on Tuesday at Kelly High School.
Elsberry qualified for the district finals by beating host-Valley Park 10-0 in the semifinals on Saturday.
The Wildcats and Indians squared off in the district finals for the third year in a row. A year ago, MCHS knocked off Elsberry 1-0 in the district finals at the Elsberry Athletic Association fields. The year before that, the Indians beat the Wildcats 7-4 in the district championship at Kiwanis Fields.
On Monday, Elsberry scored three runs in the first, one in the third and two each in the fifth and sixth innings to avenge the 4-1 loss to MCHS on Oct. 6 at Kiwanis Fields.
The Indians finished with nine hits. They got a three-run homer by Mackenzie Varner in the first, an RBI single by Lidia Mound in the third, an RBI triple by Katie Brinkman and an RBI sacrifice fly by Varner in the fifth and a two-run single by pitcher Kourtney Koch in the sixth.
Hill drove in the Wildcats’ only run with a solo home run over the left-center field wall with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, cutting Elsberry’s lead to 8-1. It was her team-leading seventh homer of the season.
Sophomore Trinity Brown finished with two hits for MCHS. She led off the bottom of the first with a single. She got another single with one out in the sixth, but was later thrown out at second while trying to advance on a passed ball. Brown finished with four hits in the district tournament. She had two hits against Louisiana on Saturday.
The Wildcats competed at the district tournament at Valley Park for the second time. Four years ago, they played in the district finals there and lost 4-3 to host-Valley Park.
