SPRINGFIELD – Even though the Montgomery County softball team didn’t celebrate a win in the Class 2 Final Four, it still left Springfield with its first trophy in program history.
The Wildcats placed fourth with an 0-2 record after losing to the South Harrison Bulldogs 16-0 in five innings in the semifinals and the Mid-Buchanan Dragons 6-0 in the third-place game at Meador Park on Friday.
MCHS finished its season at 28-7. It made its first trip to the Final Four in program history. The Wildcats advanced to the Final Four by beating Chaffee 7-5 in a quarterfinal game on Oct. 25 at Chaffee.
Four MCHS seniors wrapped up their high school softball careers on Friday. They were Gracie Cobb, Dylan Topel, Skylar Bethmann and Hailey Meyer. Topel finished with a hit in each game and Bethmann hit a double against Mid-Buchanan.
Reese Hill had two hits against Mid-Buchanan, a triple in the third and a single in the sixth. She lost both games in the circle.
Anna Klekamp singled in the fourth against Mid-Buchanan. She attempted to score on Bethmann’s single, but was thrown out at home.
The 16 runs allowed against South Harrison tied a season-high for the Wildcats. They also gave up 16 runs against St. Elizabeth in the 16-1 loss in the third-place game of the South Callaway Tournament.
South Harrison, located in Bethany, scored four runs in the top of first, nine in the second, one in the fourth and two in the fifth. The Bulldogs, who came from behind to beat Highland in a quarterfinal game on Saturday, advanced to play Holden in the championship game at 10 a.m. Saturday. Both teams are looking to win their first state championship.
The loss to Mid-Buchanan marked the second time this season MCHS lost back-to-back games. The Wildcats lost back-to-back games to New Bloomfield and St. Elizabeth at the South Callaway tournament.
MCHS also was shut out for the third and fourth time this season with the defeats to the Bulldogs and Dragons.
Mid-Buchanan, located outside of Saint Joseph, finished its season at 32-8 and captured its fifth top-four trophy in program history. The Dragons bounced back from a 3-2 loss to Holden in the semifinals.
In addition to their first Final Four appearance, the Wildcats also set a school record for most wins in a season. They won their first district title since 2018.
The softball team joined the 2019 baseball team, 2005 football team, 1991 volleyball team and four boys basketball teams in a group of MCHS squads that placed in state tournament action.
