The Wellsville-Middletown track team will send six athletes to the Class 1 state track championship meet at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.

Seniors Keaton Mayes, Layne Norris and Isaac Seabaugh, junior Jacob Mandrell, sophomore Bethany Slovensky and freshman Hunter Bickell will represent the Tigers at the state event, which starts on May 20 and ends on May 21.

Mayes, Norris and Seabaugh will make their third state appearance. Mandrell and Slovensky will compete at state for the second year in a row and Bickell will make his state debut.

Slovensky will compete in three events at the state meet – the 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash. She finished in the top four in those events at the Class 1, Sectional 1 championship meet at Lutheran North High School in St. Louis on May 14.

Slovensky won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.78 seconds, her second straight sectional championship in that event. She placed second in the 300-meter hurdles at 50.51 seconds and third in the 100 at 13.63 seconds. She came up one place short of qualifying for state in the 200, finishing fifth in 28.68 seconds.

Now, Slovensky is hoping to qualify for finals in all three events as she will compete in the preliminaries on May 20. Preliminaries are scheduled at 11:50 a.m. for the 100-meter hurdles, 12:20 p.m. for the 100 and 3 p.m. for the 300-meter hurdles.

Last year, Slovensky competed in four events at state. She earned two all-state medals, placing third in the 100-meter hurdles and eighth in the triple jump. She also finished ninth in the 300-meter hurdles and 15th in the 200.

Slovensky qualified for sectionals by winning the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, placing second in the 100 and third in the 200 at the District 2 championship meet at Glasgow High School on May 7.

Mandrell qualified for state in the triple jump and the 110-meter hurdles. He placed second in the triple jump in 39 feet, 10 inches and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.70 seconds. The junior also had eighth-place finishes in the long jump and 300-meter hurdles.

Mandrell is scheduled to compete in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles at 11:30 p.m. Friday. He will compete in the triple jump finals at 10 a.m. the following day.

Mandrell earned a trip to sectionals by winning the 110-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump and placing fourth in the 300-meter hurdles at districts.

Seabaugh will look to get an all-state medal in the 800 for the second year in a row as he qualified for Jefferson City in the event with a second-place finish at sectionals. He finished with a time of 2:10.20. Last year, he placed sixth in the 800 at state.

Mayes also qualified for state in the 800, placing third with a 2:12.10 at sectionals.

The 800-meter run at state is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Saturday. There are no preliminaries.

Seabaugh and Mayes also helped the 3,200-meter relay team earn a trip to state. The relay team, which also included Norris and Bickell, placed third with an 8:58 at sectionals. The squad will run at 11 a.m. Friday.

The 4x800 team will look to earn all-state honors for the second straight year. A year ago, the team of Seabaugh, Mayes, Norris and now-graduated Jacob Hollensteiner finished eighth at Jefferson City.

The Tigers came into the Lutheran North sectional meet with 12 athletes. Senior Jason Hollensteiner, junior Lucas Moore, sophomore Aiden Beach and freshmen Gage Marshall, Jonah Slovensky and Cooper Henderson were W-M’s other sectional representatives, but didn’t qualify for state.

The W-M boys team will have five athletes at the state meet for the second straight year.
