Montgomery County residents will get an opportunity to burn off some pounds from the Thanksgiving dinner as well as help out the Montgomery County Senior Center in the morning of Nov. 29.
The First Annual MOCO Turkey Trot 5K will be held at the Montgomery County High School track at 8 a.m. and is sponsored by Achieve Fitness. The entry fee is $25. Registration is still open.
Achieve Fitness owner Gabrielle Talley started planning the 5K run earlier this fall. So far, the event has over 50 people sign up for the race.
“It’s really something I wanted to do last year, but I wasn’t able to pull it off in time,” Talley said. “We had some events come up, so this year, I want to make it happen.”
Proceeds of the run will go toward the Senior Center, which serves residents from Montgomery City, Wellsville, High Hill, Jonesburg and New Florence.
“The Senior Center is a big part of our community,” Talley said. “I do feel like it’s often overlooked or maybe people don’t realize how big of a part it is of our community. They just offer so much to our senior citizens between both nourishment and the social aspect of everything.”
Last year, the Senior Center served 5,140 meals in house and delivered over 21,000 meals. Talley said her workplace, State Farm in Montgomery City, has numerous clients who frequently visit the Senior Center.
“My mom and my mother in law both have or currently deliver meals for the Senior Center,” Talley said. “My mother in law would take my kids and my kids love going and helping deliver meals. I feel like it’s a very vital part of our community that could use our community support.”
The Senior Center is making medals for the top three finishers of the race, which starts near Kiwanis Fields and ends behind the track. The run will go through Highway 19, Niedergerke, Harness, Aguilar and Baugh drives and Long Road.
“It’s actually a route I typically run myself, so I knew it’s about three miles already,” said Talley, who has been owner of Achieve Fitness since 2015.
Check in for the race starts at 7 a.m. on Nov. 29. Participants can still register by sending in their money to either Achieve Fitness or the Senior Center. Checks can be made out to the Senior Center.
