The Wellsville-Middletown boys basketball team did it again on Jan. 29.
The Tigers captured the Keytesville Tournament championship for the second year in a row after beating the Higbee Tigers 67-60 in the title game at Keytesville High School. The 67 points marked a season high for W-M.
W-M, the No. 2 seed in the eight-team tournament, finished 3-0 in the 62nd annual tournament. The Tigers also beat host-Keytesville 48-7 in a first-round game on Jan. 25 and Brunswick 50-33 in a semifinal game two days later.
Also, the W-M girls team placed third in the Keytesville Tournament, defeating the Southwest Wildcats 52-14 in the third-place game on Jan. 28. It’s the second year in a row, the Tigers came in third at Keytesville.
Last year, the W-M boys squad captured the Keytesville championship for the first time in program history after beating Southwest 67-32 in the finals.
After beating top-seeded Higbee in this year’s finals, the Tigers improved to 12-4. They also handed Higbee (18-1) its first loss of the season.
Freshman Carson Huff finished with 23 points, including nine in the first quarter. After Higbee came back from a 14-point, second-quarter deficit to tie the game at 56-56, Huff scored a bucket with 1:50 left in the fourth quarter to give W-M a 58-56 lead.
The Tigers never trailed after that. They hit seven free throws down the stretch.
Senior Isaac Seabaugh scored 14 points with two 3-pointers and 10 rebounds. His 3-pointer with four minutes left in the second quarter gave the Tigers a 30-16 lead, their biggest lead of the game.
Junior Logan Pursifull also finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Senior Keaton Mayes added 10 points
The W-M girls surpassed their win total of four from last year with the win over Southwest in the third-place game. They improved to 5-10.
The Tigers, the No. 3 seed in the seven-team tournament, defeated Bevier 53-23 in a first-round game on Jan. 25 before falling to second-seeded Brunswick 40-31 in the semifinals.
W-M jumped out to a 9-0 lead over Southwest in the third-place game and never looked back.
Sophomore Bethany Slovensky finished with 19 points, including 11 in the third quarter, to lead the Tigers.
Also for W-M, freshman Hallie Guzy finished with seven points and senior Dani Hager and sophomore Jenelle Boeckleman had six points apiece.
Both boys and girls teams were scheduled to play an Eastern Missouri Conference road game on Feb. 1 against Elsberry.
They will play a home game against Sturgeon on Feb. 3 and a road game against Louisiana on Feb. 4.
