The Wellsville-Middletown High School sophomore class had reason to celebrate on Feb. 7.
Sophomores Legend Davis and Willard Shireman left the school’s gymnasium as the homecoming queen and king. They earned their honors during the coronation, which was held after W-M’s girls-boys basketball doubleheader against Louisiana.
Davis and Shireman were part of a court that included seniors Della Gosseen and Cooper Henderson, juniors Brooke Stroup and Sam Page and freshmen Marli Yelton and Brandon Murphy.
Shireman became the second sophomore in two years to be named king. He received his crown from last year’s winner Zackery Vogel. Davis became the first sophomore since Bethany Slovensky in 2022 to be voted queen.
Both Davis and Shireman were surprised that they were queen and king for 2025.
“I am flabbergasted,” said Davis, who received her crown from last year’s queen Meagan Cripe. “I really expected the seniors to win, but it just shows how well the community is and it’s not always the older people.”
“I was in shock because I figured Cooper and Della would have won,” Shireman said. “I voted for them myself.”
W-M’s homecoming theme this year was “Restore the Roar.” Davis and Shireman enjoyed being part of W-M homecoming week that included days in which students got to wear their pajamas and dress like their favorite teacher.
“I had so much fun partaking in every activity,” said Davis, who wants to attend Valdosta State University for college.
“We had a great week with all of the dress up days and everything,” said Shireman, who wants to attend technical school in the future. “It all came together and it was a great time.”
Shireman is playing in his first year with the W-M boys basketball team. He helped the Tigers win six games, tripling their win total of two from last year.
“It’s going pretty good,” said Shireman, who is playing basketball for the first time since elementary school. “We’ve got to get some more wins under our belt. Hopefully, we’ll get seeded higher in districts and go as far as we can.”
Davis is in her second year with the W-M basketball cheerleading team. She is one of three sophomores on the squad.
“I love my coach Michelle (Stroup),” Davis said. “I couldn’t have done it without her. I love varsity. We get to do very fun things. We actually got to go perform in the state basketball game this year.”
Davis said she enjoyed being part of the court that included her three cheermates in Stroup, Gosseen and Yelton.
“It was very good competition, but I think it was a friendly competition because we all knew each other,” Davis said. “We just wanted everyone to at least get a chance to win. If one of us didn’t win, we’ll be happy that the other did.”
With Davis and Shireman coming back next year as juniors, they are already looking forward to next year’s homecoming coronation.
“I’m so excited to see who comes next year for the competition and who we get to crown,” Davis said.
