W-M students prepare for comedy play

For years, Tiffany Gosseen got to see her daughters perform in plays at Wellsville-Middletown High School. Now, she’s directing the plays.

Gosseen, who is the principal at W-M Elementary School, is orchestrating a play about a grandmother putting a silly twist on fairy tale bedtime stories. It is called “Twice Upon A Time.”

Gosseen watched her daughter Della perform in three plays and another daughter, Sadie, perform in two. She said she’s thrilled to take over the director’s role for the first time.

“I’m having a lot of fun,” Gosseen said. “The kids are great. They’re responding really well to everything. They’re not terribly goofy. Of course, they want to visit with their high school kids. But when it’s time to work, they’re really working for me.”

The play is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 13-14 at the W-M gymnasium. The cost of the tickets is $10 for reserved gym floor seating and $5 for open bleacher seating. Tickets will be on sale this week. Milk and cookies will be handed out to the audience in the reserved gym floor section.

“Twice Upon A Time” is based on a play that was created by Tracy Wells. In the story, the grandmother enjoys telling adventure stories instead of fairy tales, so she comes up with a silly retelling of classics such as Cinderella, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

“It’s a pretty physical comedy as far as using the props,” Gosseen said. “We have a clumsy grandmother instead of a clumsy stepmother or an evil stepmother. It’s some fun stuff.”

Della Gosseen, a junior, plays the grandmother. Her grandchildren are played by Aubrey Harmon, Helanea McKenzie and Lilli Carlisle.

Della will be in her fourth play. Last year, she played one of the main characters in “The History of Dating.” She said she enjoys having her mother as the director.

“That’s a lot of fun,” Della said. “It’s definitely different from what we had in the past. I think she’s doing a good job. I like how it’s coming together.”

Tiffany Gosseen picked “Twice Upon A Time” for this year’s play. There are 18 actors and four crew members in the play.

“In this play company that we go through, you can order up to five titles for a discounted price,” Gosseen said. “So I got those and I looked through them and kind of thought about what we would have as sets and number of characters. I have to make sure that we have the right number of actors to fill all of those roles and then narrow it down to whichever one I thought the audience would enjoy more.”

The cast also includes senior Bethany Slovensky as Cindy-Rella, Meagan Cripe as the Blink Wonderman, Brooke Stroup as Snow White, Jenna Collins as Goldilocks and Kara Freie as the Big Bad Bear. Gosseen said in the play, all of the students will get an opportunity to be comedic in their roles.

“Brooke Stroup has to sing horribly while she is on the stage,” Gosseen said. “That’s a little embarrassing. You don’t want people to hear you sing horribly. But it’s not her who is singing so badly. It’s Snow White. The cast is getting a chance to act a little silly and have a good time with it.”

There are several students who are playing multiple roles in the play, including junior Haskell Davis. He plays Horace the Prince, Perry the Pig and the Mean Dwarf.

“We’re a small school,” Gosseen said. “It seems that all of our kids are involved in multiple activities. So if they’re doing cross country and FFA, they’re already busy with a lot of stuff and have to find time to get the play in there.”

In addition to being an actor in a school play, Davis is a member of the FFA chapter and president of the art club and competes with the cross country team.

“All of it is so stressful for me, but I feel like I can get it done,” Davis said.

Other cast members are Kylie Allison, Charlie Freie, Leah Kleinsorge, Luke Nelson, Gage Nichols, Leo Oligschlaeger, Cayden Orick and Indica Scott. The crew members are Riley Butler, Jenelle Boeckelman, Jonah Slovensky and Carla Gonzalez.
