W-M’s Seabaugh earns Class 1 all-state honors

Isaac Seabaugh wrapped up his four-year basketball career at Wellsville-Middletown High School with a memorable trip to Springfield.

The senior not only made his first appearance at the Class 1 Show-Me Showdown at Missouri State University, but he also helped his team earn a fourth-place trophy. He was the first player to receive the trophy during the awards ceremony.

“It was really great,” Seabaugh said. “It was kind of one of my childhood dreams. I have been going to those games since I was in fifth or sixth grade. I always dreamed of doing this. This is where I wanted to finish one day. I wanted to be here and I wanted to play here. Even though it didn’t end how I wanted it to, it was a dream come true.”

Seabaugh turned in a successful senior season for the Tigers, leading the team in scoring (324 points), rebounds (161) and 3-pointers (27) and helping the Tigers make their first Final Four appearance since 1987.

The efforts impressed the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association. Seabaugh was named to the MBCA Class 1 all-state basketball team, which was released on March 23. He was the only player in the Montgomery County area to earn all-state honors.

“It means a lot,” Seabaugh said. “I thought I had a pretty good chance of being on that list, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up or anything and then be disappointed if I wasn’t on the list. Whenever I saw my name on there, it was a feel-good moment.”

Seabaugh was part of an all-state list that included Higbee’s Jordan Fuemmeler, brothers Austin and Tyler Schwebach of Stanberry and St. Elizabeth’s Brock Lucas. The Tigers beat Higbee in the district finals and lost to Stanberry and St. Elizabeth in the Final Four.

Seabaugh also became the second W-M player in as many years to earn all-state honors. Last year, Clayton Ebers – who is now attending William Woods University – was named on the Class 2 all-state team.

“We helped each other become better,” said Seabaugh, who also received first-team all-Eastern Missouri Conference notice. “We have played against each other since fourth grade. Our parents are best friends and we have been best friends for a long time.”

Seabaugh led a team that had six juniors, four freshmen and senior Keaton Mayes. The Tigers finished 20-8 after losing their first two games of the season.

“All of us came together and stepped up,” said Seabaugh, who helped the boys cross country team place third in the Class 1 state meet in November. “We had the same goal in mind. We played together this whole summer with one goal in mind and that was to get to the Final Four. We did the best we could.”

Seabaugh, who is undecided on his college plans for next year, said he believes his team will turn in another strong season next winter.

“I think they’ll struggle a little bit with me and Keaton gone, but I think they’ll come together and have a pretty solid team next year,” Seabaugh said.
