The Wellsville P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) group is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding this year.

The chapter was founded on Sept. 14, 1923. There are currently 22 members in the Wellsville P.E.O. group. The members meet on the second Tuesday of each month. Their next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 9.

“We have seven projects, six of the projects are the ones that support women, where we could further the education of women in uniform,” said Jeana Houf, who is serving her first year as group president.

Houf leads a group that includes vice-president Bette Lowry, treasurer Jane Heim, chaplain Jeane Oligschlaeger, guard Jeania Burton, Jane Myers, Suzan Whitehead, Mary Ellen Wilkinson, Jenny Spiers and Beth Schnitker. All of them attended a luncheon on Sept. 9 at the Wellsville United Methodist Presbyterian Church to celebrate the organization’s 100th anniversary.

There is also a P.E.O. chapter in Montgomery City. The Wellsville chapter had a meeting with the Montgomery City chapter on Oct. 10.

“One of their members went to the International Chapter in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and she came back and reported,” Houf said. “She has to report to six or seven chapters. So to help ease her burden of traveling, we always meet. We take turns meeting. This year, it was in Wellsville.”
