When the Kissing Cow was opened in Wellsville in May 2024, it gave Montgomery County residents an opportunity to purchase hormone free beef and pork.
Now, the store is enjoying its new location with more storage space and an art gallery.
In May 2025, the Kissing Cow moved to 127 W. Hudson Street, just a block from its old location of 215 W. Hudson Street. It has a total of nine places in its new building where it stores its meat, compared to three from its last location.
“We started looking for a location of our own that we need to grow into,” owner Sara Freie said. “We were very fortunate with Mrs. Sally over at Ponay’s when she had us in her spot there. But we were starting to expand to a point where we needed to have some room to be able to have customers come in and also to be able to bring in a lot more meat.”
The new building used to house a bank. Freie said the new location has attracted many customers since the move four months ago.
“Demand has definitely increased since we came in here,” Freie said. “We get new customers every day when we’re open. It’s thrilling. We’re absolutely ecstatic in how well we have been received again in the community.”
Freie, her son Ethan and her mother Becky Rushing make up the staff of the Kissing Cow. Next door is Gram’s and Papa’s Hardware at 125 W. Hudson, which is owned by Rushing and her husband Scott.
The Kissing Cow operated its business at vendors, fairs and farmer markets before moving to the Wellsville business district last year.
Freie said she started looking at the new location for the Kissing Cow in April.
“There was another set of people that outbidded us to start with,” Freie said. “But that fell through and we were able to come in with our original offer to be able to buy the place. Between here and the hardware store, those two buildings were bought together because they’re connected. Having the hardware store is also just a blessing in terms of being right next to each other.”
A new handrail was built at the new location. Sara Freie designed the handrail, while Mark Freie created it.
“Some of our customers have trouble going upstairs,” Sara Freie said. “Sometimes I have trouble going upstairs. The way that they’re set is a little bit of incline, so we wanted to make sure that our customers had a bit of safety going up and down the stairs. But we didn’t want to put out any regular old hand rail. So my husband had the idea of maybe putting horseshoes in the shape of a cowhead. He looked at how to do it, then I helped him basically design it out. He did all of the welding and created that handrail for us.”
The Kissing Cow is open from Tuesday to Friday from 1 p.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. It was open three days a week in its old location.
“We like being open later,” Freie said. “I think we noticed that a lot of people get off of work and still want to come by and pick up things. So we wanted to be open later during the weekday so they can get to us.”
Freie said her mother’s artwork makes up the majority of the art gallery.
“We also have a small display of another local artist,” she said. “There will be times where we may feature other local artists here in the shop.”
All of the meat that is sold at the Kissing Cow is raised by Freie Farm in Middletown, which is owned by Mark Freie. The Kissing Cow also has a website, www.kissingcow.com.
