As its schedule approaches the first days of October, the Montgomery County football team continues to heat up.
The Wildcats won their fourth straight game on Friday, topping the Bowling Green Bobcats 42-6 in a Week 7 game at Jim Blacklock Field. They improved to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in Eastern Missouri Conference play. MCHS hasn’t lost a game since Week 3
The Wildcats also snapped a six-game losing streak to Bowling Green. It was MCHS’ first win over the Pike County school since 2019. Bowling Green, which competed in the Class 2 state semifinals in each of the last two years, dropped to 2-5.
MCHS came from behind to beat the Bobcats, scoring 42 unanswered points after getting up a touchdown from a recovered fumble by Bowling Green in the final minute of the first quarter.
Chase Queathem scored two touchdowns and Adrian Combs, Wyatt March, Jackson Benney and Mac Farrar each had a touchdown to lead the Wildcats, who scored 40 or more points for the second time this season.
Combs’ 1-yard TD run and a two-point conversion by Benney with 6:28 left in the second quarter gave MCHS an 8-6 lead it never relinquished for the rest of the game.
A 14-yard touchdown catch by March and a two-point conversion by Queathem with 1:19 to go in the first half increased the Wildcats’ lead to 16-6 at halftime.
Queathem scored a 10-yard touchdown run with 10:59 remaining in the third quarter to boost MCHS’ lead to 24-6. He scored an 87-yard touchdown run with just 14 seconds into the fourth to increase the lead to 36-6.
Farrar (60-yard touchdown catch) and Benney (76-yard touchdown interception) also scored touchdowns in the second half.
The Wildcats turned in another strong defensive effort in the contest against Bowling Green. They have given up just 26 points in the last four contests. A week ago, they beat Mark Twain 38-0 for their first shutout since 2020.
The MCHS football team celebrated Hero Night on Friday as it honored firefighters from the Montgomery, Jonesburg-High Hill, New Florence and Bellflower fire departments at halftime.
MCHS’ four-game winning streak is the longest since it won five games in a row in the 2020 season. The win over Bowling Green guaranteed the Wildcats at least a .500 season.
MCHS travels to Wright City on Oct. 17 in the battle of the Wildcats. Wright City improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in EMO play after beating Van-Far 55-26 in a road game on Friday. The 55 points marked a season high for Wright City.
