The Montgomery County Wildcats celebrated another Pink Out sweep over the Wellsville-Middletown Tigers on Friday.
The Wildcats won both girls and boys contests over the Tigers at W-M’s Roundtree and Johnson Court. MCHS squeaked past W-M 42-39 in the girls contest and won 101-35 in the boys game, making it the third year in a row the Wildcats swept the Tigers in the Pink Out doubleheader. Both earned Traveling Trophies.
The 14th annual event honored the people who are battling cancer. Jessica Penn was the guest speaker between the girls and boys games, chronicling the journey of her 11-year-son Tyler, who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor called pineal gland germinoma in April.
Also, a check of $5,791.84 was presented to the Helen Reagan Cancer Fund, which began in 1991 in honor of the Montgomery County resident who lost her battle with cancer. For the last 14 years, both MCHS and W-M have raised thousands of dollars to help promote cancer awareness.
Money was raised from concessions, rally towels, pom poms, cookies and cotton candy. An online auction was also held.
The MCHS girls improved to 4-4 with the come-from-behind victory over W-M. Trailing 39-34, the Wildcats closed the game on a 7-0 run, including a 3-pointer by Aubrey Janes with 28 seconds left that gave MCHS the 42-39 lead.
Janes finished with a team-high 17 points with three 3-pointers and freshman Emma Rodgers scored all of her 10 points in the second half to lead the Wildcats, who won their second straight game.
Rodgers hit a 3-pointer with 1:16 left in the game to cut the Tigers’ lead to 39-37. Janes tied the game at 39-39 with a layup with 37 seconds to go. After a W-M turnover, Janes received a pass from Rodgers and hit the game-winning, 3-pointer from the left wing.
MCHS improved to 2-0 in Eastern Missouri Conference play. The five-time defending EMO champions started their league play on Monday with a 38-32 victory over Silex.
The Wildcats are back in action at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 against Moberly at the Moberly Area Community College Holiday Shootout.
W-M dropped 2-4 overall and 0-1 in EMO play. The Tigers’ two-game winning streak was snapped.
Senior Keigan Hall scored 20 points – 10 in each half – and senior Hallie Guzy finished with 11, including a free throw that gave W-M a 39-34 lead with 1:27 to go in the contest.
The Tigers’ next game will be on Jan. 3 against South Callaway at home.
The MCHS boys improved to 9-0 with their second victory over the Tigers this season. The Wildcats beat W-M 105-24 in a first-round game of the Montgomery County Invitational Tournament on Dec. 3, en route to the tournament championship.
Before this season, the last time MCHS broke the 100-point mark was on Feb. 8, 2017, when it scored 101 points against – who else – the Tigers.
The Wildcats also improved to 3-0 in EMO play. They picked league wins over Silex and Wright City.
Senior Clayton Parker scored 22 points, senior Andrew Moore had 18 and Tyler Erwin finished with 10 to lead MCHS, which won the Pink Out game for the third consecutive year.
The Wildcats are back in action at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against University City at the Ramey Shootout at Ritenour High School.
W-M dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in EMO play with the loss to MCHS and will play its next game on Jan. 7, when it plays New Franklin in a first-round game of the New Franklin Tournament.
Gage Marshall scored 14 points, including 11 in the first half, to lead the Tigers.
Editor’s note: Print versions of the girls and boys games will be published in the Jan. 1 edition of the Montgomery Standard.
