The Montgomery County baseball team is off to an outstanding start in Eastern Missouri Conference play, winning seven of its first eight games.

Now, the Wildcats hope they celebrate their ninth conference title and their first since 2019.

After pulling off a 7-6 win over the Van-Far Indians at home on April 18, the Wildcats have outscored their conference opponents 45-13. They scored 10 runs or more in four league contests.

MCHS has  two conference games remaining. The Wildcats are scheduled to play Elsberry at home on May 3. Elsberry is 9-0 in EMO play.

Wolk saw the Indians play against the Wright City Wildcats on April 19 and pulled off a 14-11 victory.

“It was a really close game until the very end,” Wolk said. “I know Elsberry has been getting better each year. They run the bases well. They get some very timely hits.”

The Wildcats were scheduled to play North Callaway on the road on April 20, but it was postponed due to rain. A makeup date has yet to be announced.

Whenever the two teams play against each other, MCHS will look to beat the Thunderbirds for the second straight year. North Callaway took a 6-1 conference record into its game against Louisiana on April 25.

“We just have to come out and play our best game,” Wolk said. “I believe that if we pitch really well and play defense, I think we’ll be very successful against them. I know that they have scored quite a few runs as well.”

Wright City handed the Wildcats their first conference loss of the season on April 29, beating MCHS 9-4.

“Wright City has been on top of the conference the last couple of years,” Wolk said. “They started out rough this year, but they’re starting to get back in stride and trying to get healthy. They have quite a few returning all-conference players. I know that they do anything they can with bunting, hit and run and hitting for power. They do a lot of the little things right and that’s how they have been successful in conference in the past.”

The Wildcats took a 9-4 record into their road contest with Hermann on May 1. They are looking to finish with their second straight winning season.

“This is a team that never gives up,” Wolk said. “They never feel like they are out of a game. We had a few games that were close. Then, we ended up coming together at the very end of the game. With the Van-Far game, we didn’t get overexcited. We always felt like we had a chance until the last out. So we’re gelling well as a group and we’re trusting each other.”

MCHS began its conference season on March 27 with a 6-1 win over Silex. The Wildcats also beat Mark Twain 10-0 on March 30, Bowling Green 11-3 on April 11, Clopton 12-3 on April 13, Wellsville-Middletown 15-0 on April 25 and Louisiana 6-2 on April 27.

With the one-run win over Van-Far, MCHS defeated the Indians for the seventh straight meeting.

“I thought Van-Far played a really good game against us,” Wolk said. “We hit a lot of balls hard right at them and they made the plays until we came through in the last inning.”

The Wildcats will end their conference season on May 3 against Elsberry.

Out of all of the players on the baseball team, two of them helped the MCHS boys basketball squad win an EMO championship this winter. They were junior Mason Leu and sophomore Tatum Wessel.
