'Cats, Tigers set for Pink Out doubleheader

For the first time in four years, the Pink Out basketball doubleheader between the Montgomery County Wildcats and the Wellsville-Middletown Tigers is back at W-M High School.

The 12th annual event is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. on Dec. 16 with the girls game, followed by the boys game at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the W-M gymnasium. The theme of the event is called, “One County, One Cause, United We Fight.”

All proceeds of the event go to the Helen Reagan Cancer Fund, which began in 1991 in honor of the Montgomery County resident who lost her battle with cancer. For the last 12 years, both MCHS and W-M have raised thousands of dollars to help promote cancer awareness.

Last year, the two schools raised $6,907.63, which included money from concessions, rally towels, pom poms, cookies and cotton candy.

Both schools will have dress-up days on the week of the contest. W-M students will dress like a hippie on Dec. 13, dress in their favorite pink character on Dec. 14, wear their black and gold on Dec. 15 and wear all pink on Dec. 16.

The last time the Pink Out doubleheader was played at W-M was on Dec. 14, 2018, when MCHS completed the sweep over the Tigers.

W-M hosted the event on Feb. 8, 2021, but it was played at MCHS’ Ballew & Snell Court since it had a larger capacity than W-M’s gym.

MCHS hosted last year’s doubleheader on Dec. 17, 2021. The Wildcats topped the Tigers 58-30 in the girls game, while W-M knocked off MCHS 36-24 in the boys game.

The Wildcats hit 11 three-pointers in the girls contest to beat the Tigers for the 12th consecutive year. In the boys game, W-M snapped a nine-game losing streak to MCHS.

The two teams will play for a Montgomery County Traveling Trophy, which goes to the winner of each game. They have been playing for a trophy since 2010.

“The kids are excited about the opportunity to compete,” W-M coach Todd Cripe said. “(MCHS coach) Joe Basinger does a great job over there. The girls work extremely hard for them. I feel my girls work extremely hard for me. No matter how it ends up, it will be fun to watch from a fan’s standpoint.”

Nancy Blaue will be the guest speaker in this year’s contest. Both schools will hold a silent auction and T-shirts were scheduled to come out on Dec. 11.
