Wellsville-Middletown brought a small roster to this year’s Eastern Missouri Conference championship meet, having just four runners competing in the boys division.
Seniors Jonah Slovensky and Gage Marshall, junior Zackery Vogel and sophomore Shane Joles were the Tigers’ representatives at the conference meet on Oct. 19 at North Callaway High School. Marshall was W-M’s top finisher, placing 22nd with a 20:07. He was followed by Slovensky (25th, 20:14), Joles (32nd, 21:35) and Vogel (36th, 22:02). W-M didn’t receive a team score since it came up one runner short from having a full squad.
Marshall competed at the EMO meet for the fourth time. He placed 27th with a 20:11 last year and 31st with a 20:56 the year before. He picked up a fifth-place finish in the junior varsity division when he was a freshman.
Slovensky also made his fourth EMO meet appearance. He finished 30th in his freshman and sophomore seasons and 26th in his junior year.
Vogel participated at the EMO meet for the third year in a row. He finished 35th last year and 41st the year before.
Joles made his second EMO meet appearance and made a six-place jump from last year’s 38th-place finish.
W-M is the smallest school in the EMO. Slovensky said competing at the conference cross country meet is not easy.
“We have a competitive conference,” the senior said. “They’re a lot of bigger schools, so it’s a lot harder for us to do well.”
Marshall, Slovensky, Vogel and Joles are the only members of the W-M team. They have combined for seven medals this season. Marshall and Slovensky received medals at the W-M Invitational and the Clopton Hamburger Meet, Joles picked up medals at the season-opening Van-Far Invitational on Sept. 9 and the Linn Invitational and Vogel got a medal at Linn.
The Tigers wrapped up their regular season on Oct. 25 at the Bowling Green Invitational. They will compete at the Class 1, District 3 championship meet on Nov. 2 at Fulton High School.
