For the second year in a row, the Montgomery County football team saw its season end at Jefferson County.
This time, it was Jefferson High School that ended the Wildcats’ season.
MCHS fell 14-12 to the Blue Jays in a Class 2, District 2 semifinal game on Friday at Jefferson High School, located south of Festus. The Wildcats finished their 2026 season at 6-5, their second straight winning season.
A year ago, MCHS was eliminated by St. Pius X in a state quarterfinal game that was played at St. Pius X HIgh School, located in Crystal City.
On Friday, the Wildcats led 6-0 after the third quarter before Jefferson came back with two touchdowns by Logan Young in the fourth quarter to pull off the win and advance to the district finals against top-seeded Valle Catholic next Friday.
Jefferson, which is playing in its 16th season of football, is the No. 2 seed in the six-team district tournament. MCHS was seeded third. The Blue Jays earned a quarterfinal-round bye, while the Wildcats got a forfeit win over Confluence Prep Charter Academy in the quarterfinals last Friday.
Friday’s loss to Jefferson ended the high school football careers of seniors Lafe McCurdy, Tyler Rodgers, Owen See, Troy Quesenberry, Dallas Hans, Isaac Hinkel and Jack Barker.
McCurdy provided all of the Wildcats’ points in the contest. He scored a six-yard touchdown run with 8:21 left in the second quarter that gave his team a 6-0 lead. With 31 seconds left in the game, he caught a 15-yard touchdown pass by Hinkel to cut Jefferson’s lead to 14-12.
McCurdy had a chance to tie the game on a two-point conversion after his second touchdown, but he was stopped at the two-yard line.
Young, who is a freshman on the Jefferson roster, scored a 24-yard touchdown run with 7:35 left in the fourth quarter and a four-yard touchdown run with 3:58 to go. Each of those touchdowns was followed by a PAT by junior Dakota French.
Jefferson denied MCHS’ chances of winning a second straight district title. The Wildcats won their 12th district title and their first since 2005 with a win over Bowling Green in the finals last year.
The Blue Jays improved to 7-3 with Friday’s win. They will look to win their second district title in school history with a win over Valle Catholic, which is 10-0.
The Wildcats and the Blue Jays squared off the first time on Friday.
