As the basketball regular season comes down to the final two weeks, the Montgomery County boys and girls are still cruising in Eastern Missouri Conference play.
Now, both teams are looking to win EMO championships in the same year for the third year in a row and for just the sixth time in school history.
The MCHS boys and girls are undefeated in league play. The boys are 7-0 and the girls are 6-0.
The Wildcats are tied for first with Clopton in the EMO boys standings with three league games remaining.. MCHS and the Hawks will square off on Feb. 20 at Ballew & Snell Court in the regular season finale for both squads.
The Wildcats are also tied for first with Clopton in the EMO girls standings. MCHS will play the Hawks at home Feb. 21, which will be the last regular season contest for both teams.
The MCHS boys remained unbeaten in league play after beating Mark Twain 104-29 on Feb. 11. So far, they have been demolishing their EMO competition, winning by an average margin of 50 points. They also had conference wins over Bowling Green, Silex, Wright City, W-M, Elsberry and Van-Far.
The Wildcats are looking to win their third straight EMO title and their eighth in program history. They took a 27-game conference streak into their game with Louisiana on Feb. 14.
“It will be really nice,” said senior Clayton Parker, who became the Wildcats’ all-time leading scorer in their win over Van-Far. “This group has won two and it is looking for its third straight. It will be really nice if we can do it three in a row with this group of guys.”
MCHS plays a home game against North Callaway the following night.
The MCHS girls extended their conference winning streak to 57 games with a 60-52 win over Mark Twain on Feb. 11. They also had EMO wins over Silex, Wellsville-Middletown, Bowling Green, Van-Far and Wright City.
The Wildcats have home conference games against Louisiana and North Callaway on Feb. 13 and 15, respectively. They have a road contest against Elsberry on Feb. 18.
MCHS is looking to win its sixth straight conference title -- all under coach Joe Basinger -- and its 10th overall.
