Anna Johnson was pretty busy in her first two months as a freshman at Montgomery County High School.
She competed in both cross country and volleyball for the Wildcats, making her the only MCHS athlete to play two sports in the same season.
Johnson said when practices began in August, she had her mind set on competing in both sports.
“I like them both and I couldn’t choose,” Johnson said. “They help keep me in shape for track season, too.”
Johnson is enjoying a successful cross country season that included her first medal at the Eastern Missouri Conference meet. She placed 12th with a time of 24:37.8 to earn all-conference honors.
“It’s really exciting to do it as a freshman and it’s really exciting to do it with all of my teammates,” Johnson said.
Johnson was one of five MCHS runners who earned all-league honors, joining Austin Spinks, Jacob Roesner, Olivia Spurgeon and Katlyn Kolling.
Johnson's first season with the cross country season ended on Nov. 1, when she finished 58th with a 24:54.6 at the Class 3, District 3 meet at Linn High School. It was her first district race.
Johnson came into this season with plenty of cross country experience. She ran for the High Hill Hounds cross country team for years.
“Before that, I ran with our librarian,” Johnson said. “Our elementary librarian had a team too for a while.”
Johnson is the only freshman of a cross country team that has just seven runners, one of them is out of the season due to injuries.
“It’s fun,” Johnson said. “I love our team. I love going to all of our practices and our meets. Everything is great.”
Johnson finished 93rd with a 24:39.7 in her first high school cross country race on Sept. 5, the First Capitol Meet in St. Charles. She ran a season-best time of 24:18 at the Camdenton Laker Invitational on Oct. 3.
Johnson said after two months, she had no problems keeping up with her schedules with cross cross country and volleyball.
“It’s just about balance,” Johnson said. “I’ll go to cross country and I’ll come home and do a running workout and shower and go to bed, wake up and do it all again the next day.”
Johnson played for the junior varsity and freshman teams in volleyball. She was one of 10 freshmen on the volleyball team.
“It was great,” said Johnson, who played volleyball at Montgomery County Middle School. “I loved our team. I loved playing volleyball. We had a good season. It was a good year.”
Johnson is also a member of the MCHS FFA chapter. She plans to compete in track next spring.
