With five returning players, the Montgomery County girls basketball team is setting its sights on finishing with another winning record this winter.

The Wildcats begin their season at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 21 against Monroe City at Ballew & Snell Court. Last year, MCHS started its season with a 51-26 loss to Monroe City, snapping an eight-game season opener winning streak.
MCHS will have seven home games this season. It will also participate in tournaments at Montgomery County, South Callaway and Hermann and shootouts at Moberly Area Community College and Tipton.
The Wildcats will end their regular season on Feb. 18 with a road game against Warrenton. It will be the first time since 2017 MCHS will take on the Warriors.
Last year, the Wildcats bounced back from their season-opening loss to Monroe City to come up one win short of winning a district championship. MCHS fell to Centralia in the Class 3 district finals.
The Wildcats finished third in the Montgomery County Invitational Tournament and won a consolation title at the South Callaway Tournament. In Eastern Missouri Conference play, their five-year run as champions came to an end, but finished in a tie for second with Elsberry and Louisiana with an 8-2 record in the league standings. MCHS’ conference season begins on Dec. 15 with a road game against Silex.
Janes and Rodgers are back as the Wildcats’ top scorers. Last year, Janes and Rodgers were named to the all-EMO team.
Janes was named to the all-tournament team at the Montgomery County Tournament and tied a school record seven 3-pointers in a game at the Hermann Tournament. Rodgers scored 12 points in her high school basketball debut against Monroe City and finished as the team’s leading scorer at the MCHS tournament with 57 points.
Daume returns for her second year with the varsity. She got to play her first full season with the varsity last season after missing most of freshman year due to injuries and illnesses.
Schroer and Hemeyer will also be playing in their second seasons with the varsity.
The Wildcats have 15 players on their team this year after having just eight a year ago. They have seven freshmen and no seniors.
Joe Basinger returns for his 10th season as MCHS coach. He has 157 wins during his tenure.
