After hosting district and sectional meets the last two years, the Montgomery County track team will be traveling in this year’s postseason.

The Wildcats will head to North Point High School in Wentzville on May 13 to compete in the Class 3, District 4 championship meet. They will be part of a field that will include Boonville, Bowling Green, California, Centralia, Clark County, Hallsville, Macon, North Callaway, Palmyra and Southern Boone.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the Class 3, Sectional 2 meet on April 20 at Mexico High School. The top four finishers in each event at Mexico advance to the Class 3 state meet, which is scheduled for May 26 and 27 at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.

The Wellsville-Middletown Tigers will start their postseason on May 6, when they compete in the Class 1, District 2 championship meet at South Callaway High School. The top four finishers in each event advance to the Class 1, Sectional 1 championship meet on May 13 at New Haven. The top four finishers at New Haven qualify for the Class 1 state meet on May 20, which will also be at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.

The South Callaway district meet will have 17 teams.
MCHS qualified 17 athletes to sectionals in 2022, 10 of them have returned this year. They are juniors El Reagan, Jacer Brower, Malia Rodgers and Weston Marshall, seniors Lyric Ford, Adam Czerniewski and Dominic Luttrell and sophomores Jadrian Thurmon, Tyler Erwin and Trenton Birkner.

Erwin will look to win another district title in the high jump. He won the event with 6 feet, 3.5 inches in last year’s districts at Jim Blacklock Field. He went on to earn an all-state medal in the high jump, placing eighth with a 6-3.5.

So far, Erwin is enjoying another strong season that includes two wins each in the high and long jumps and one in the triple jump. He turned in his best effort of the season on April 25, when he won the high jump in 5-10.75 and the triple jump in a personal-best 42-7.5 at the Hermann Invitational.

The Wildcats are the defending district champions in the 4x100 and 4x200 relay events in the boys division.

MCHS had 13 state qualifiers in 2022. Seven of them earned all-state honors, including Reagan, who won a state title in the pole vault.

W-M qualified 12 athletes to sectionals last year, seven of them have returned this year. They are seniors Jacob Mandrell and Lucas Moore, junior Bethany Slovensky and sophomores Hunter Bickell, Gage Marshall, Jonah Slovensky and Cooper Henderson.

Last year, Mandrell won district titles in the triple jump, long jump and the 110-meter hurdles to help the Tigers finish second in the district meet at Glasgow and earn their first district plaque in program history.

Slovensky, a two-time all-state performer, is the defending district champion in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles.

The Tigers qualified six athletes to Jefferson City last year. Three of them – Slovensky, Mandrell and Bickell – are back this year.
