The Montgomery County baseball team will be doing some traveling in this year’s district tournament.
Hopefully, all of that traveling will pay off with a district title.
The Wildcats drew the No. 2 seed in the five-team Class 3, District 5 tournament, which will be played at the Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex, 65 miles east of the Montgomery County High School campus.
Duchesne is the host of the district tournament and drew the top seed.
MCHS will begin its district tournament play at 12:30 p.m. on May 16 against the Bowling Green Bobcats in a semifinal game at Bridgeton. The winner advances to the championship game, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on May 18.
The Wildcats are looking to win their first district championship since 2019 and their second in program history. They were eliminated in the district semifinals in each of the last four years. They last played in a district final in 2021.
Last year, MCHS lost to South Callaway 12-3 in a Class 3, District 5 semifinal game at South Callaway.
The Wildcats are enjoying another outstanding season this spring. After beating Winfield 10-6 on May 8, the Wildcats improved to 16-6 and clinched their fifth straight winning season. They surpassed last year’s win total of 13.
“We lost some close games we probably should have won, but we also won some that have been close,” MCHS senior Adrian Combs said. “We just have to keep pulling out tough games and keep playing our best ball. I think we have still yet to do that, so I think our best baseball is in front of us.”
The Wildcats will take on Bowling Green for the second time this season at the district tournament. They beat the Bobcats 3-0 in the last meeting on April 14 at Bowling Green. In that contest, Noah Beck pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out 10 batters and got two hits at the plate. Also, Colby Ellis and Marshall Bishop each drove in a run.
Bowling Green is the No. 3 seed. The Bobcats took a 9-9 record into their regular season finale with Warrenton on May 12.
The Wildcats were also scheduled to end their regular season on May 12 as they took on New Haven at home.
Before districts and pairings were announced, the Wildcats played all of their district opponents except Elsberry. They had wins over Bowling Green and Mark Twain, but lost to Duchesne.
MCHS lost to the Pioneers 10-0 on March 19 at CarShield Field in O’Fallon. The Wildcats had just two hits in that contest.
Duchesne will play the winner of Elsberry-Mark Twain in the district semifinals at 10 a.m. on May 16 at Bridgeton. Fourth-seeded Elsberry and fifth-seeded Mark Twain will square off in a district quarterfinal at 5:30 p.m. on May 14 at Bridgeton.
Duchesne took a 21-4 record into its game with St. Dominic on May 11. The St. Charles school won a district title in Class 4 last year. It won a state title in Class 3 in 2024.
