Olyn Davis, Isaac Todd qualify for state for Wellsville-Middletown

Posted

The 2026 Wellsville-Middletown track season will continue in Jefferson City this weekend as two athletes will be making their state meet debuts.

Senior Isaac Todd and sophomore Olyn Davis will represent the Tigers at the Class 1 state meet at Adkins Stadium after turning in top-four finishes in the discus and 100, respectively, at the Class 1, Sectional 1 meet on May 16 at South Callaway High School.

Todd placed third in the discus with a throw of 129 feet, 4 inches, while Davis came in fourth in the 100 in a personal-best 11.75 seconds. It will be the sixth year in a row the Tigers will have a state qualifier.

Todd and Davis were the Tigers’ only athletes at sectionals. Todd qualified for sectionals after placing first in the discus at the Class 1, District 1 meet on May 9 in New Haven with a school-record 134-11.75, breaking the old mark of 131-7 that was set by Tyler Bunch in 2018. Davis won the 100 in 12.01 seconds and second in the 200 in 24.58 seconds.

Davis came up short of a state-qualifying bid in the 200 at sectionals, placing sixth with a personal-best 24.23 seconds.
Both Davis and Todd competed at sectionals for the first time. Davis said he enjoyed competing in front of a large crowd at Mokane.

“It was a great crowd with all of the cheering,” Davis said. “It was just amazing.”

The Class 1 state meet will run on Friday and Saturday. Davis will compete in the 100 preliminaries at noon on Friday. If he finishes in the top eight, he will compete in the finals at 11:35 a.m. on Saturday.

Todd will compete in the discus finals at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
Both Davis and Todd hope to continue a streak of W-M all-state track medalists. The Tigers had at least one all-state medalist in each of the last five years. A year ago, W-M had three all-state medalists.

Davis, who is in his first year with the track team, edged Dean Morgan of Oran by eight-tenths of a second to earn the fourth and final state-qualifying spot. He finished behind three seniors.

“I thought I got fifth for a second,” Davis said. “I thought he beat me. I was running my hardest. It was the hardest I ever ran.”

Davis broke his previous-best time of 11.79 seconds he set at the Cunningham Invitational on April 23 at Louisiana.

Todd is competing in his second year with the W-M track team. Last year, he placed 13th in the discus at districts. This year, he has been the team’s top performer in throwing events, placing in the top four in the discus five times.

Both Todd and Davis also play for the W-M baseball team. They helped the Tigers knock off Madison 5-4 in nine innings in a Class 1, District 5 quarterfinal game on May 14, the program’s first postseason win in three years.
