The Montgomery County softball team got a big reward for winning its first Eastern Missouri Conference championship.
The Wildcats got more all-conference selections than any other team with six. Seniors Gracie Cobb and Dylan Topel, juniors Reese Hill, Anna Klekamp, Sam Turner and Jillian Weekley were MCHS’ representatives on the all-league team, which was released in October.
Hill earned her third all-conference award, Klekamp and Weekley were named to the all-EMO team for the second year in a row and Cobb, Topel and Turner received their first all-league awards.
The Wildcats finished in a three-way tie for first place with North Callaway and Elsberry with a 9-1 mark in the EMO standings to capture their first conference title in program history. Elsberry handed MCHS its only loss in league play.
The Wildcats clinched the conference title by beating Louisiana 3-2 in their EMO finale on Oct. 13 at Kiwanis Fields.
Cobb delivered the walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh against Louisiana. She went on to finish with a career best .343. Cobb hit .481 (13 for 27) in 10 conference games, including a three-hit effort in a contest against North Callaway on Sept. 25 in which MCHS came from behind to win 7-6. Cobb earned second-team honors.
Topel finished with a .327 batting average. She had just five hits in conference play, one of them was a home run in the Wildcats’ EMO opener against Silex on Sept. 4, her first home run of her high school softball career. She was named first-team catcher.
Hill hit a team-best. 515 and won 23 games in the circle. In conference play, she batted .600 (15 for 25) and had a four-hit performance against Bowling Green. She also won eight games in the circle. Hill earned first-team pitcher honors for the third year in a row.
Klekamp finished with a .398 batting average with a home run and 22 RBIs. She hit .407 (11 for 27) in EMO play and finished with two hits in four conference games. Klekamp, who played center field, earned first-team outfielder honors. Last year, she was named on the second team.
Turner batted .378 with a team-high 46 RBIs. She hit .483 (14-29) with 12 RBIs in league play. She drove in four runs in a contest against Van-Far. Turner, who played first base, was named first-team infielder.
Weekley earned second-team all-EMO honors for the second straight year despite missing the final 13 games due to an injury. She had five hits in league play, including a two-hit effort against Van-Far on Oct. 1, her last game before sitting out for the rest of the season. She finished with a .418 batting average and was 4-0 on the mound.
The Wildcats finished 28-7 and placed fourth in the Class 2 state tournament. In addition to its first EMO title, MCHS set a school record for most wins in a season, captured a district title and reached the Class 2 Final Four for the first time in program history.
