Six Montgomery County athletes will be heading back to Centralia this week.
Seniors Cooper Sellenriek and Katlyn Kolling, junior Samantha Turner, sophomores Emma Rodgers and Mieka Ray and freshman Trinity Brown will represent the Wildcats at the Class 3, Sectional 2 meet on May 16 at Centralia High School.
The six athletes qualified for sectionals based on their performances from the District 4 meet that was held at Centralia on May 9. Turner won the shot put and placed second in the discus, Rodgers won the 800, Sellenriek placed third in the 400 and javelin, Ray came in fourth in the triple jump and the 1,600-meter relay team of Rodgers, Ray, Brown and Kolling finished fourth.
The top four finishers at sectionals qualify for the Class 3 state meet, which is scheduled for May 22-23 at Jefferson City. Turner, Rodgers and Ray are the returning state qualifiers.
Also, Wellsville-Middletown has a pair of first-time sectional qualifiers. Senior Isaac Todd and sophomore Olyn Davis will be the Tigers’ representatives at the Class 1, Sectional 1 meet on May 16 at South Callaway. Todd won the discus and Davis placed first in the 100 and second in the 200 at the Class 1, District 2 meet on May 9 at New Haven.
If Todd and Davis finish in the top four in their respective events, they will advance to the Class 1 state meet on May 22-23 in Jefferson City.
Turner won her third district title in the shot put in as many years. The junior threw 38-5-2.5 in the event, her second-best throw of the season.
Turner threw 117-11.75 in the discus to finish second to Centralia’s Kassena Ridgel. It’s the second year in a row she qualified for sectionals in both shot put and discus.
Turner will look to qualify for state in both events for the second straight year. A year ago, she placed second in the discus and third in the shot put at state.
Rodgers won the 800 in a 2:25.96, making it her fourth win in the event this season. Last year, she finished second in the 800 at districts and went on to finish eighth in the event at state.
The 4x400 team of Rodgers, Ray, Brown and Kolling finished fourth with a 4:20.60 to clinch the final sectional spot. Last year, Rodgers and Ray helped the relay team win a district title and place second at sectionals to qualify for state.
Ray finished with a 34-2.5 in the triple jump, the same mark from her second-place finish at the Eastern Missouri Conference meet on May 1.
Sellenriek ran 53.21 seconds in the 400 and threw a personal-best 153-7.25 in the javelin to become the lone athlete on the MCHS boys track team to qualify for sectionals.
By qualifying for sectionals, Sellenriek and Kolling will continue their high school track careers for at least another week. They will compete in sectionals for the first time.
At the New Haven district meet, Todd threw a personal-best 134-11.75 in the discus to pick up his first victory of his high school track career.
Davis also celebrated his first high school track win after finishing in 12.01 seconds in the 100. He finished in 24.58 seconds in the 200.
