A year ago, the Montgomery County softball team ended a seven-year district championship drought with a win over Elsberry in the finals.
Now, the Wildcats are looking to win another district title as the top seed in the Class 2, District 2 championship tournament at Valley Park High School. Tournament seedings and pairings were released on Oct. 8.
MCHS earned the No. 1 seed in the six-team district tournament, which started on Oct. 15.
The Wildcats drew a quarterfinal-round bye and will play fifth-seeded Louisiana in a semifinal game at 4 p.m. on Oct. 17. A win would advance them to the championship game, which is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Oct. 19.
Valley Park is seeded second and will play third-seeded Elsberry in the other semifinal game at 2 p.m. on Oct. 17.
The Wildcats are looking to win their third district championship in program history. Last year, they topped Elsberry 1-0 in the district finals as the No. 2 seed at the Elsberry Athletic Association Fields en route to a fourth-place finish at the Class 2 state tournament.
This year, the Wildcats will have to make the 69-mile drive to Valley Park to compete in districts. In 2022, the program competed in the Class 2, District 4 tournament at the West St. Louis County school and reached the finals, where Valley Park edged MCHS 4-3 on a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh.
The Wildcats played two district tournament opponents this year -- Elsberry and Louisiana. They beat Elsberry 4-1 on Oct. 6 and Louisiana 18-0 on Oct. 13.
The Wildcats won their first district championship in program history in 2018. They made it to the district finals two more times (2022 and 2024) before coming out on top in 2025.
