Tigers top New Haven for sixth victory

Posted

Kaleb Peak has been a solid performer for the Wellsville-Middletown cross country and track teams all four years.

But he also shows that he can play baseball, too.

The Wellsville-Middletown senior outfielder had his best performance of the season on April 14 in his team’s 12-2 home victory over New Haven in six innings. He finished with two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs to help the Tigers improve to 6-2.

Peak wrapped up the game with one out in the bottom of the sixth, when he smacked a two-run single to right field that scored sophomore Haskell Davis and junior AJ Sherwood.

“It was probably the best hit of the season,” Peak said.

The 12 runs marked a season high for the Tigers, who scored in single digits six times. They scored five of those runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

“We had a very good hitting game,” Peak said.

Peak was coming off a strong performance for the W-M track team at the Wright City Invitational the day before, getting medals in the 3,200-meter relay and 1,600-meter run.

Peak said he enjoys staying busy with baseball and track during the spring season.

“After school, I go to track for about an hour,” said Peak, who competed in the state cross country meet in each of the last two years. “Then, I come (to baseball) until about six o’clock. If we have a game and track meet on the same day, I’ll come to baseball because baseball is my primary. It can be a challenge sometimes. It can wear you out if you’re not careful. The key is to get plenty of sleep as much as you can and get plenty of rest so you’re nice and rested for both track and baseball.”

Five other baseball players also compete in track. They are seniors Dylan Alsop, Lucas Moore and Logan Pursifull, junior AJ Sherwood and sophomore Gage Marshall.

Moore also turned in an outstanding effort against New Haven, getting two hits with three runs scored, two RBIs and five stolen bases. The day before, he competed in three relay races at Wright City.

First-year W-M coach Alex Thull said the versatility of the six players has been one of the main reasons his team is off to a strong start. The Tigers have tripled their win total of two from last year.

“I’ve been pushing for those kids to do dual sports because we have so many kids who are so athletic and we’re a small school, so we have to be involved here,” Thull said. “As their weight coach, I have every kid. I have all of the girls. I have all of the boys. I want them to be successful in their sports and do more than that to help themselves get better as athletes.”

Pursifull, who won a shot put title at Wright City, said he is thrilled that he’s playing both sports this spring after missing all of his junior year due to ACL surgery.

“It’s great to be back,” Pursifull said.

Pursifull started the scoring in the bottom of the first after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing Brennan Cash to score from third to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

With W-M leading 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Peak, who was batting ninth, led off the inning with a bunt single. He later scored on a passed ball to increase the Tigers’ lead to 4-0.

“Sometimes I can’t really feel my legs, but I always try to give it my all and run my heart out and try to beat everything I can,” Peak said. “I always give it 110 percent.”

Thull said he was happy with the way Peak and Moore performed in the bottom half of the lineup.

“It was nice to see Lucas and Kaleb get going tonight,” he said. “That was a huge game from our seniors when we needed them the most. If we’re going to go far, I need Lucas and Kaleb to have great games.”

Also for the Tigers, senior Mason Guzy had two hits at the plate and finished with eight strikeouts and one hit allowed to pick up the win on the mound and Alsop hit a double in the sixth.
