The Wellsville-Middletown track team hopes to repeat last year’s successful season that included 43 first-place finishes from six athletes, five school records and three all-state medalists.

The Tigers have several returning athletes from the 2024 team, four of them competed in last year’s Class 1 state meet. They are seniors Cooper Henderson, Gage Marshall and Jonah Slovensky and sophomore Elly Cash.

Henderson and Marshall earned all-state medals last year. Henderson finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles and Marshall came in seventh in the high jump.
Henderson, who is coming off a strong basketball season this winter, had 11 first-place finishes – including district and sectional championships in the 110-meter hurdles – and earned his first all-state track medal last spring.

Marshall received all-state notice in the high jump for the second straight year and picked up a couple of victories in the event in 2024.

Cash qualified for state in the 100-meter dash and ran a school-record time 13.21 seconds in the preliminaries last year.  She also had a pair of wins in the event, including one in sectional competition that qualified her to Jefferson City.

Slovensky was the Tigers’ top performer in the triple jump last spring, winning three meets and earning a state berth.

Among the other returning athletes on the W-M team are seniors Della Gosseen, Justin Beabout, Brennan Cash, Haskell Davis, junior Brooke Stroup and sophomores Aubrey Harmon and Shane Joles.

Last year, Davis and Joles competed in sectionals for the first time, but didn’t qualify for state. Joles participated in the 4x100 and 4x800 relays and Davis ran in the 4x100.

The Tigers lost three athletes to graduation, including Bethany Slovensky, who earned 10 all-state medals during her high school track career and is currently competing at State Fair Community College.

W-M begins its season on March 24 at the Van-Far Open Warm-Up Meet. Last year, the Tigers had 10 first-place finishes from six different athletes at the Van-Far meet.
