Harms was one of 36 honorees for the award. She was the only Montgomery County-area teacher named on the list. Teachers from neighboring schools such as Wright City, Warrenton, Van-Far, Hermann and Community R-6 were also nominated.

Harms has been working at the R-II School District for 18 years, all of them at MCE. She taught at Warrenton Christian School for 20 years before joining the MCE teaching staff in 2008. She taught fourth and fifth grade for several years before she was moved to second grade in 2018.
