The Montgomery County volleyball team will make another trip to Hermann on Wednesday.

The Wildcats’ season will continue for at least another match as they knocked off the North Callaway Thunderbirds in four games in a Class 2, District 6 quarterfinal match at Hermann High School. MCHS won 25-21, 25-23, 24-26, 25-20 to advance to the district semifinals against the top-seeded Linn Wildcats.

The district semifinal between MCHS and Linn is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The winner will play either Hermann or Fatima in the championship match at 6 p.m. on Monday. Hermann, the No. 2 seed and the 10-time defending district champion, and third-seeded Fatima square off in the other semifinal on 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The third time was the charm for the Wildcats with the win over North Callaway on Tuesday. MCHS lost to North Callaway twice in the regular season.

The Wildcats also avenged last year’s loss to North Callaway in the district quarterfinals, which were also in Hermann.

MCHS improved to 12-16-3, quadrupling its win total of three from last year. The Wildcats also won their third straight match.
On Wednesday, MCHS will look to avenge the two-game loss to Linn at the Tolton Catholic Tournament on Aug. 29. The Wildcats lost that match 22-25, 16-25.

Linn drew a quarterfinal-round bye and will take a 22-5-1 record and six-match winning streak into Wednesday’s match with MCHS, which is the No. 5 seed.

The Wildcats got off to a strong start against North Callaway on Tuesday, storming to a 6-0 lead. Sophomore Millie Shaw served five points and two aces during that run. North Callaway came back to get within 21-20 but that’s as close it got.

In the second game, MCHS led 6-2 and 17-11 before the Thunderbirds rallied to tie it at 23-23. The Wildcats won the game by getting points on a North Callaway serving error and a kill by Emma Cobb and took a 2-0 lead in games.

MCHS came within a point from sweeping the match as it led 24-21 in the third game. But the Thunderbirds rallied to a 5-0 run to win the game.

With the fourth game tied at 18-18, the Wildcats got strong efforts from twins Kiera and Mieka Ray. Kiera served four points to give her team a 23-18 lead. On match point, Mieka served an ace to seal the Wildcats’ victory.

North Callaway, the No. 4 seed, ended its season at 20-8-2 and had eight seniors play their final match.

With the win over the Thunderbirds, the senior class of Reaghan Hemeyer, Addison Brower, Megan Pierson, Khloe Kribbs and Dakota Maron will get to play another match on Wednesday.
