The Wellsville-Middletown’ basketball season came to a close as both boys and girls squads were eliminated within a 24-hour span at the Class 1, District 10 tournament at Madison High School.
The girls finished their season at 7-18 after losing to Higbee in a quarterfinal game on Feb. 23. The following day, the boys lost 85-21 to Christian Fellowship in a quarterfinal contest and ended their year at 2-25.
Two players – Helanea McKenzie and Mia Romecka – competed in their last game as Tigers in the girls contest and both turned in strong efforts.
McKenzie, a senior, scored 12 points, including eight in the second half. Romecka, a foreign-exchange student from Poland, finished with 10.
McKenzie, who plans to attend Evangel University next year, played with the W-M squad all four years. Romecka, who transferred to W-M in August, will head back overseas after the school year.
Willard Shireman was the Tigers’ leading scorer with eight points in the boys contest, followed by Brandon Murphy with four, Shane Joles with three and Chandler Parker, Garrett Poage and Andrew Maskey with two each.
The girls surpassed last year’s win total of six. They started their season on Nov. 21 with a 33-7 win over Liberty Christian. The Tigers beat Liberty Christian again on Dec. 12 and had victories over Bevier, Chamois, Sturgeon, Heartland Christian Academy and Northwestern/Keytesville.
W-M defeated Northwestern/Keytesville 26-18 in the third-place game of the Keyteville Tournament on Jan. 31.
With the loss to Higbee, the Tigers finished their season with seven straight defeats. They also finished 0-10 in Eastern Missouri Conference play.
The other players on the team were juniors Elly Cash and Aubrey Harmon and freshmen Alexis Brennan, Julieanna Dodd, Ava Geisler and Emma Null. Geisler scored five points against Higbee.
The W-M boys defeated Keytesville twice for their only wins. They started their season at 0-9 before beating Keytesville in the Madison Tournament. They ended their season with a 10-game losing streak. W-M also finished 0-10 in EMO play.
The Tigers have no seniors on their squad. Joles, Shireman and Urich Lobb make up the junior class, Parker, Murphy, Poage and Nathan Mitchell are the sophomores and Maskey, Charlie Freie, Colton Schofield and Hunter Crew are the freshmen.
Steve Lasman returned for his second stint as boys basketball coach this winter. He coached the team from 2017-2024 before stepping down after the 2023-24 season to take over the girls team. He finished his second year as the girls coach this year.
