Wildcats aim for another successful spring season

Posted

The Montgomery County Wildcats will look to turn in another successful spring season like last year, when they won Eastern Missouri Conference team titles in girls track and golf, had three athletes earning all-state awards and had two of their teams finish with winning records.

In 2025, Sam Turner, Emma Rodgers and Tyler Erwin earned all-state honors in track. The girls track team won its ninth EMO championship and the golf team captured its eighth league crown. The baseball team finished 13-8 and the golf team won 25 matches in dual-match play.

Baseball

The Montgomery County baseball team is seeking its fifth straight winning season as 12 players return from last year’s team.
Seniors Noah Beck, Landyn Bender, Adrian Combs, Colby Ellis, Mac Farrar, Edwin Garcia, Chase Queathem and Seth Walton and sophomores Marshall Bishop, Lucas Bender, Brendan Crider and Zander Beck are the returning players for the Wildcats, who start their season on March 19 with games against the St. Louis Patriots (9 a.m.) and Duchesne (11:30 a.m.) at CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

MCHS returns to O’Fallon the following day with a game against St. Charles at 9 a.m.

A year ago, the Wildcats surpassed their 2024 win total of 12 and were 6-3 in Eastern Missouri Conference play. But they were eliminated in the district semifinals for the fourth year in a row as they fell to South Callaway in the Class 3, District 7 semifinal round.

The strong effort from the junior class was the key in the Wildcats’ successful season. Five of those players – Garcia, Queathem, Ellis, Beck and Farrar – were named to the all-EMO team.

Garcia was the team’s leading hitter with a .418 batting average, Queathem had 19 hits, Beck won four games on the mound, Farrar led the Wildcats in RBIs with 16 and Ellis finished with 16 hits and 13 RBIs.

Also last year, Combs – who is coming off outstanding seasons in both football and basketball – had 11 hits.

Walton returns this year after missing most of the 2025 season due to a foot injury. He won two games on the mound before getting injured.

Don Moultrie is back for his third season as MCHS coach.

Track

The Wildcats bring back five athletes – all girls – who competed in last year’s state track meet, two of them made trips to the medal podium.

Junior Sam Turner is the Wildcats’ top returning performer in the throwing events. She finished second in the shot put and third in the discus in the 2025 state meet, giving her a total of three all-state medals in her high school track career. She broke school records in both shot put and discus and finished with a combined six wins in the throwing events.
Sophomore Emma Rodgers returns to the distance events after placing eighth in the 800 at state and earning seven first-place finishes last year.

Junior Aubrey Janes and sophomore Mieka Ray are back after competing in the 1,600-meter relay at state in 2025. Rodgers was also on that relay team.

Junior Kaylee Daume is another returning state qualifier. She competed in the shot put at last year’s state event.
The MCHS girls will look to win the Eastern Missouri Conference title for the seventh year in a row. They won last year’s meet by 12.5 points.

Seniors Cooper Sellenriek, Kendrick Lewis and Ashton Johnston and juniors Lafe McCurdy, Owen See and Noah Lacy are among the top returning athletes for the MCHS boys, who finished second at last year’s EMO meet.

The Wildcats begin their season on March 24 at the Montgomery County Early Invite at Jim Blacklock Field. Last year, they finished sixth in the girls division and eighth in the boys division. MCHS will host the EMO meet on May 1.
Stephanie Finke returns for her 16th season as head coach.

Golf

Six players return from last year’s team that finished with 25 wins in dual-match play and captured an Eastern Missouri Conference championship last year.

Seniors Karter Reagan, Wyatt March and Jacob Ridenhour and juniors Jack Barker, Owen Merz and Kaiden Waite are back from the 2025 team.

Reagan was the Wildcats’ lone state qualifier last spring, marking the fifth year in a row MCHS had a state qualifier. He placed 25th with a 168 at the state tournament in Sedalia. He qualified for state by finishing in an eight-way tie for 13th with an 82 in district play. Reagan earned all-EMO honors by placing third with an 86 at the conference tournament.

March also picked up an all-conference award in 2025, finishing 10th with a 102 at the conference tournament.

MCHS won the league tournament by shooting a 191 and edging 2024 champion North Callaway by two strokes. It was the Wildcats’ first EMO title since 2022.

MCHS’ season begins on March 24 at the Montgomery County Open at Wildcat Golf Course.

Cody Hasekamp is back for his fourth season as head coach.
