The Montgomery County Wildcats’ home season is off to a flying start as they celebrated back-to-back wins in a span of 24 hours.
MCHS cruised to a 12-0 win over Clopton in its home opener on March 25 and came from behind to knock off Linn 9-3 the following day.
Now, the Wildcats are setting their sights on finishing with another successful home season in 2026. Last year, MCHS played just six home games, but finished with a 4-2 record.
The Wildcats have a 12-game home schedule this year. They were scheduled to play Silex at home on March 30. They also have home games against Southern Boone (April 8), New Bloomfield (April 9), North Callaway (April 22), Louisiana (April 30), Wright City (May 2), St. Charles (May 2), Hermann (May 4), Winfield (May 8) and New Haven (May 12).
MCHS’ contest against Clopton opened its Eastern Missouri Conference season. A year ago, the Wildcats lost 5-2 to the Hawks on the road. This year’s game ended in the bottom of the third due to the 15-run rule. The 15 runs marked a season-high for the Wildcats.
Against Linn, MCHS trailed 3-0 before scoring all nine of its runs in the bottom of the fourth, capped by a two-run homer by senior Adrian Combs that tied the game at 3-3. It was Combs’ first home run of his high school baseball career.
Senior Colby Ellis drove in six runs in the Wildcats’ win over Clopton. He hit a grand slam in the second inning and an RBI single in the third.
Also against the Hawks, senior Noah Beck picked up the victory, giving up just one hit and striking out three. Seniors Seth Walton and Edwin Garcia and freshman Liam Combs each had two hits.
With the win over Clopton, MCHS is looking to finish with another winning season in EMO play. The Wildcats finished 6-3 in league play in 2025.
In the contest against Linn, senior Mac Farrar had three hits, Walton and sophomore Marshall Bishop each had two hits and Garcia drove in four runs for the Wildcats, who beat Linn for the third year in a row. Bishop broke the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fourth with a single that scored pinch runner Zander Beck.
Bishop also picked up the victory on the mound. He came in relief for Farrar with one out in the top of the third and the bases loaded. He struck out three, gave up three walks and didn’t allow any hits or runs.
Walton, who started the game at center field, pitched the final two innings and gave up two hits.
The Wildcats took a 3-2 record into their contest with Silex. Going into the game, they had seven players who were hitting over .300. Walton is leading the way with a .471 batting average, followed by Garcia at .444 and Beck at .438. The Combs brothers – Adrian and Liam – have a combined eight hits.
MCHS has back-to-back road games against Warrenton on April 1 and Mark Twain on April 2.
