An old warehouse on Sturgeon Street in Montgomery City will turn into a superstore that will include a party supplies store, a coffee shop, a smoke shop and a liquor store.
The building will be called Montgomery County’s Super Mart, and it will have Patriot Liquor, Hunter’s Party Supply Center, Jenny’s Smoke Shop and Penny’s Coffee Kitchen. Oscar Hunter, who owns Hunter Saak Investments, said it could open as early as Nov. 1.
“We got it divided up and sectioned out already,” Hunter said. “We put a whole new roof on it, repaired all of the sides and got it painted and added that big concrete parking lot. We even fixed the storm sewer for the city.”
Hunter bought the 50,000-square foot building for over $800,000. It is located next to the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, which plans to build a new food stand and an open air pavilion after receiving a donation of $1 million from Amazon in June.
“I was looking at some other property,” Hunter said. “I saw it and found out it was coming up for auction. So they turned my bid down for what I tried to buy it for. Then, I bought at the auction for a little bit more, but it worked out.”
A new roof and a parking lot have been completed. Hunter said he was happy that the City of Montgomery approved the project.
“That city right now is one of the best ones to deal with there is,” he said. “They’re very cooperative in letting a business into town.”
Jeff and Jenny Culbertson will be the managers of the building. Hunter said they will take care of hiring employees to work at the four stores.
“They’re still looking for more help, but we got enough people hired to open now,” Hunter said. “They’re all local people.”
Hunter’s Party Supply Center will sell balloons, helium tanks, birthday banners, school spirit items and tableware. Hunter said the Party Supply Center will have 30 stores in central Missouri within five years.
“According to our supplier, we’re going to be one of the biggest stores in the state,” Hunter said.
Patriot Liquor will open at its second location. There is also a location at 201 East Booneslick Road in Jonesburg.
“Everybody loves it,” Hunter said. “It’s a nice, clean store.”
Penny’s Coffee Kitchen will sell iced and hot coffee, breakfast sandwiches and energy drinks and will serve breakfast and lunch. Jenny’s Smoke Shop will sell vapes, cigars and cigarettes.
Hunter said there is no timetable on a grand opening for the Super Mart.
“It’s going to be the dead of winter, so we would like to have a big one outside,” he said. “But we may save that for the spring.”
