The Wellsville Historical and Preservation Society recently received funds from Amazon and the MFA Foundation to help the organization make improvements on the Burlington-Northern Railroad train depot on Hudson Street.
Amazon invested $12,000 and the MFA Foundation invested $5,000. The money will cover a new roof, some guttering and a paint job. Wellsville resident Jessie Maylee will do the painting and Smallwood Construction in Wellsville will put on the new roof.
The society was awarded the funds from Amazon after Society President Dena Saak contacted Jennifer George, Vice President of Development of NorthPoint.
“Somebody gave her my telephone number and she reached out and shared that they have that project,” George said. “She shared that they received the bids and they were hoping to be able to put the architectural shingle on it. I said, ‘We would be able to help out with that. No problem.’”
NorthPoint is a real estate development firm that is partnering with Amazon Web Services to develop the first phase of Project Green, which is a data center that is being built outside of New Florence. Amazon invested $10 billion in the project.
The other data center in the New Florence area is being built by Google. The company invested $15 billion in the data center project.
Train depot improvement plans began earlier in the summer, when Saak discussed the project with Paula Adams, who is the city representative for the Depot Board.
The depot has been in its original location since 1981. It moved from the area that was nearby Wellsville-Middletown R-I School. The Montgomery County Historical Society owned the depot before handing it back to the City of Wellsville. The depot hosted events on Halloween and Christmas for several years.
