The Montgomery County football team couldn’t pull off another victory over the Bowling Green Bobcats.
The Wildcats’ three-game winning streak was snapped after losing to the Bobcats 55-34 in an Eastern Missouri Conference game at Bowling Green. MCHS dropped to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in EMO play.
Last year, MCHS knocked off the Bobcats twice last year, both were at home and by the same score, 42-6. The Wildcats beat Bowling Green in a Week 7 game to pick up their first win over the
Bobcats since 2019. A month later, MCHS beat the Bobcats again in the Class 2, District 2 championship game for their first district title since 2005.
With the win over the Wildcats on Friday, Bowling Green extended its winning streak to three games and improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in EMO play. The Bobcats have averaged 49 points a game this season and have scored more than 40 points six times this season.
Cameron Vodohosky and Mason Murry combined for eight touchdowns to lead the Bobcats. They scored four touchdowns apiece.
With the game tied at 14-14 late in the second quarter, Murry gave his team the lead for good when caught an 11-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds left. Bowling Green took a 21-14 lead it never relinquished.
The 55 points allowed marked a season high for the Wildcats, surpassing the previous mark of 54 against North Callaway.
Senior Lafe McCurdy and sophomore Ben Cobb each scored two touchdowns and senior Dallas Hans had a touchdown to lead the Wildcats.
McCurdy, who now has 17 touchdowns this season, gave his team a 6-0 lead on a three-yard touchdown run with 9:27 left in the first quarter. He cut the Bobcats’ lead to 41-34 with 8:58 to go in the fourth with a 74-yard touchdown catch and a two-point conversion.
Cobb scored both of his touchdowns in the second half. He scored a 90-yard touchdown on a kickoff return with just 15 seconds into the third quarter, trimming the Bobcats’ lead to 21-20. He caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jackson Benney with 11:22 to go in the fourth to cut Bowling Green’s score to 41-26.
A five-yard touchdown catch by Hans and a two-point conversion by Cobb with 1:10 to go in the second tied the game at 14-14.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Oct. 16 with their home season finale against Wright City. MCHS will celebrate senior night as eight seniors – McCurdy, Hans, Conor Mays, Owen See, Tyler Rodgers, Isaac Hinkel, Troy Quesenberry and Jack Barker – play their final home game. Wright City, which defeated Van-Far 48-18 on Friday, will take a 3-4 record and a three-game winning streak into the contest with MCHS.
