The Montgomery County Wildcats and Wellsville-Middletown Tigers will start their fall sports practices for the 2024 season on Aug. 12.
Locations and times for the practices are yet to be determined. They are decided by each coach. MCHS has football, volleyball, softball and cross country, while W-M has softball and cross country.
According to MSHSAA rules, individuals must complete 14 practices before they are able to participate in a contest. They are not allowed to practice without a current physical that is filed by the coach or school.
MCHS is holding a fall activity parent meeting at 7 p.m. on Aug. 11 at the high school gym. Anyone who plans to compete in a sport or activity is expected to attend with at least one parent/guardian.
Montgomery County
The Wildcats football team will have a jamboree at 6 p.m. on Aug. 23 at Winfield High School before kicking off its regular season schedule the following Friday with a home game against Hermann, which eliminated MCHS in districts last year. The Wildcats finished 6-4 in the 2023 season.
The softball team has a jamboree at Kiwanis Fields on Aug. 26 before starting its regular season on Aug. 31 with the MOCO Fall Classic, which will also be played at Kiwanis Fields. The Wildcats turned in an outstanding 2023 season, winning a school-record 18 games.
The volleyball team has a jamboree on Aug. 23 before beginning its regular season on Sept. 3 with a home match against Hermann. MCHS finished 13-13-1 and captured its sixth straight Eastern Missouri Conference title last fall.
The cross country team starts its season on Aug. 30 at the Mexico Invitational. The Wildcats had two state qualifiers and captured an EMO title in the girls division for the third year in a row in 2023. Bruce Powers takes over coaching duties this fall.
Wellsville-Middletown
Softball returns to W-M after a year hiatus. The Tigers didn’t have a 2023 season. They start their 2024 season on Aug. 30 with a road game against Paris. Alex Thull is the team’s head coach.
The cross country team begins its season on Sept. 9 at the Van-Far Invitational. W-M had one state qualifier in Bethany Slovensky last year, but she graduated in May.
