Juniors lead Tigers at conference meet

Even the cloudy and wet conditions couldn’t slow down Jonah Slovensky and Gage Marshall in the boys race of the Eastern Missouri Conference meet on Oct. 14 at North Callaway High School.

The Wellsville-Middletown juniors set personal-best marks in the 10-team conference meet. Slovensky finished 26th in 20 minutes, four seconds, surpassing the previous-best mark of 20:14 that was set at the Class 1 state cross country meet in his freshman year. Marshall placed 27th with a 20:11, breaking his previous-best time of 20:56 that was set in last year’s EMO meet at North Callaway.

Slovensky said even though he set a personal-best time, running the three-mile course at the North Callaway campus was challenging.

“I think it would have been better if it wasn’t wet here,” Slovensky said. “Other than that, I like it.”

Marshall said he was happy that he and Slovensky set personal-best times at the EMO meet just two weeks before the district meet.

“We’re working hard and it’s paying off,” Marshall said.

The Tigers will be competing in the Class 1, District 3 meet at South Callaway High School on Oct. 28. They will look to get a state qualifier for the 30th year in a row.

“It will be a new course for us, so we don’t really know what to expect,” Slovensky said.

W-M had a total of seven runners competing at the EMO meet. Besides Slovensky and Marshall, sophomore Zackery Vogel and freshman Shane Joles were the other W-M competitors in the boys race. Seniors Bethany Slovensky and Jenelle Boeckelman and freshman Aubrey Harmon represented the Tigers in the girls race.

Vogel finished 35th with a 21:59.91, just three seconds shy from his personal-best time of 21:56.8 at the Brian T. Simpson Invitational on Oct. 7 in Columbia. Joles placed 38th with a season-best time of 22:34.

In the girls race, Bethany Slovensky finished 22nd with a season-best time of 24:50. Last year, she placed 15th at the EMO meet to earn all-conference honors for the first time.

Boeckelman finished 28th with a 26:30.93 and Harmon came in 29th with a 26:35, just four seconds shy from her season-best time of 26:31 at the Simpson Invitational.

The Tigers have competed in six meets this season. They wrap up their regular season on Oct. 20 at the Bowling Green Invitational.
